I broke my computer. Oh misery. I'm also doing a lot of questioning on how my life's not going anywhere. Nothing's been going as planned. So, perhaps, I've been considering on entering the Peace Corps. or my state's national military, because there is seriously nothing going on for me that deserves any sort of pride. Being twenty-five, it bothers me that all of that ambition I had just years ago has been gradually taking a backseat to routines of nothingness.

Whew! Talk about a hiatus! I feel estranged... Anyway. Have lots of jobs, and that is taking all my time currently. Got a job teaching a few VFX classes at The Art Institute of Portland (where I went to school), a job at a law firm t doing videos, and lots of freelance work for Comcast etc.
Other than that, I don't do much. Just work. Constantly. :/ Good to be back though!

Man, I haven't been on SHF in months. Should definitely post more. So anyway . . . Good: I'm in a very happy relationship with a wonderful young woman. I love her very much. Bad: Still have the same job, just hate it more. Feel kinda trapped. Other: It's been a good summer, all things considered. Nice to be back.

Kitties!!!
@mr. Worncoat - Nothing you somewhat enjoy doing that you think someone will pay you for? I have a friend that went into Peace Corp., and she has gone all over the world. Looked like it was a good time. I hear it can actually be hard to get into though.
@kiryū Kazuma - How so? Glad to hear it anyway.
@father Vincent - Me too. I always feel terrible when a long period of time goes by without my posting here. :/ Just don't want to disappear. I would be mortified if I came back and this forum was gone like the old one. Mortified.

Is anyone else having issues getting onto the forum? for the last two days the forum refused to let me in because it reckoned my password was incorrect, even though it's impossible for that to happen because my passwords are all saved on my laptop, and just now it had finally let me in still using the same password that just yesterday it said was incorrect.
Just thought I'll raise the issue just in case it rufuses me access again in the future

So I recently had an...incident at work where I feared the possibility of losing my job, or worse.
Granted, I feel I did the right thing, and did it knowing the consequences that could come as a result.
First, for those that don't know, I am a security guard at a mall. I was called by an employee from an outlet/anchor store, being asked to assist in watching for a pair of shoplifters as they left the mall. So I got into our squad vehicle and proceeded to the lower exit of the outlet and waited with my lights off.
Sure enough I spotted the two culprits within a minute or two, and soon enough the loss prevention (LP) manager from the outlet came charging outside to try and question/apprehend them. I turned on my lights and started over toward the three of them. One of the shoplifters took off running, and I attempted to box him in, and failed. He escaped on foot, and was nearly hit by a car in the process.
The second stood there trying to reason with the LP man, trying to profess his innocence, but he'd been caught on tape. So I started to pull the vehicle back around toward them. And no sooner had I pulled around that the damn punk starts swinging at the LP man. Hit him twice in the face, and it ran through my mind that if I intervened here and hurt this guy severely, I could lose my job. I was thinking this as I parked the vehicle and was dashing out the door, ready to take action.
Another thing about my background, it's been violent. While I'm no master or total badass, I have a background in martial arts, both professionally and self taught, as well as amateur boxing. Physical conflict is no stranger to me, and it's something I actually excel at.
But I knew that if I really hurt this guy I'd be screwed, so I hesitated. Then the guy started to reach for his pocket. Instinct kicks in and I no longer give a damn about being fired or reprimanded, so I grab the guy by the elbow and get him in an arm lock, and force his arm behind his back, as the outlet LP man is trying to wrestle him to the ground. I know I stand no chance of grounding this guy without some legwork, because he has a good foot and a half on me. (I'm 5'3", very short for a male.)
When i saw his hand moving toward his pocket my first thought is he's reaching for a weapon, knife, gun whatever, but I can't let that happen. He's not even focusing on me, but he could easily kill the LP guy if it's a lethal weapon. So thinking quickly I twist his wrist as I have his arm pinned, this brings him to his knees, due to the pain and submission of the act.
It's over after that. He gets tackled as another outlet security person arrives and cuffed and the police are called. He's complaining about his wrist hurting and I'm looking at it...I dunno, but I'm pretty sure I broke it. I didn't really give a damn about pressure and force at that moment, only that he end up subdued and unable to reach into his pocket. His wrist is sitting at a slightly odd angle and he's not moving it...it's probably broken.
We find out after the police arrive that all he had in his pocket was a cell phone. The police do some questioning, the guy commited two felonies. Grand theft and assault on an officer of the law. The kicker is here, the LP man for this outlet store is actually a part time police officer. It's below 30 degrees outside and pouring down rain all this time. I'm freezing as I'm beginning to come down off my adrenaline rush...and it hits me. I probably broke this guy's wrist and I'm gonna catch hell for it. Especially if it goes to court, which given the nature of the crimes, it may.
I struggled mentally not to just hit the guy, I had a VERY clear striking opportunity at his exposed neck right as I came in and he had begun to attack the LP man. I resisted, with much effort, knowing that one good, clean blow would most likely bring him down to the ground. But I held back with all my will, and only applied actual genuine force when I thought he was reaching for a weapon, and even then I didn't strike him, only attempted to subdue and incapacitate him.
I'm still a bit worried about this. While I was doing my job, and feel what I did was the right thing to do morally, I'm not so sure the company I work for will see it my way. They're very big on keeping yourself out of liability. If this goes to court, especially if I actually did break the guy's wrist I'm not sure what's going to happen. I'm just hoping for the best.
I know that what I did was the right thing to do. But I need my job at the same time. Bit stressed.

That's a hell of a situation. I really hate that by doing your best to protect someone you could get 'flack' for breaking a guys wrist.
Far as I'm concerned, the moment you start causing shit is the moment you forfeit those rights. If you take a swing at someone, you lose any right to bitch about taking a shot or two in the face. If your wrist is broken, think twice for being an arsehole next time.
I have a close friend who was also a roommate of mine who was a bouncer at a strip club owned by the Hell's Angels for a long time. He also worked security for a casino. He's done and had done some pretty friggin rough things during those days.
I gotta say I like the strip clubs mentality. Don't be a fucking idiot and shit won't go down. Be a moron and get your face thrown through some doors.
Once you cross the those barriers, you just deserve what's coming to you. It doesn't mean beat the living shit out of someone, but if you get a bit of a beating and go through some pain, don't start throwing punches or stealing things.

And like I said, I KNOW what I did was the right thing to do. Job or not, I wasn't going to let some shoplifting punk throttle an employee, let alone attempt to draw a weapon on him. I knew I could handle the situation, and I took action. I'm now just hoping repercussion doesn't come as a result. This happened Monday night, and so far nothing's come up.

Has there been any updates?
I do believe that excessive force should be avoided, this isn't one of those cases. It appears to me that the level of force that you used was justified and suitable for the situation at hand. The guy had to be taken down, so that he could not harm your colleague or anyone else at the scene. If he had a knife - he could have killed your colleague. A gun - anybody in the area.
I don't have much knowledge on the legality of all this, but I would think you would be okay.
The man wasn't exactly an upstanding member of society with two felonies and was obviously committing another crime. This is not someone who is trying to turn his life around or start over, but a career criminal who was caught in the act and should be put away.
More importantly, you made a rational decision, and weighed the pros and cons of the situation. The fact that you refrained from using force until you saw that he could have fatally attacked your colleague should be taken into consideration. And your story and the colleague's testimony would surely support it. If you just went in swinging, then I would be worried. But, if you don't get in trouble on the legal side, but get fired anyway. Since you seem in the right, I would schedule a consultation with a lawyer and see what he says.
One thing puzzles me though, why would he reach in his pocket for his cell phone when he is hitting an employee in the face. To call a get-away car?
