Good to hear about finding a replacement, katran. As for me, I'm sitting twiddling my thumbs more or less while I wait for January, when I go into the Navy as a CTN. Really looking forward to it, too.

I spent the 4th of July weekend bored, alone, depressed, bitter and angry. I'm just glad it's over. Never thought I'd be so happy to go back to work.

We didn't celebrate fourth of July this year. In fact, I didn't know it was the 4th until well into the afternoon. But that's okay, now my family has more money for my birthday! Also, I've felt more relaxed and tranquil this week than I have in a while. I'm just not quite as anxious and depressed as I was, for a while all my down time was filled with depressed thoughts, but right now I think everything will work out.

Why is she in England and why are you so worried?

A week long series of Master Classes, she is a flutist, and I'm simply a worrier. She will be fine, but that won't stop me from worrying.

Been looking for new work and the US job market still sucks. Out of this recession my ass. NO ONE is hiring, and if there is an opening triple digit amounts of people apply to it. I keep telling myself to be thankful I still have a job but I got bills and goals in life and I cant get those at my current place of employment. A buddy of mine told me to contact a local temp agency for possible data entry work. I'd do it during the winter when the golf course closes down but if the pay is right I'll hang up my chef whites. I'm getting sick of being a chef, its a demanding field, and I still have 1 year+ left on my degree. I do freelance work from time to time but local businesses are getting stringy with the greenbacks re: 4th of July I don't like holidays. Holidays (read: society)make you feel like you should go out and do something or else you're a loser. I celebrated the 4th on the 3rd by burning christmas trees. On the 4th I played videogames, cleaned the house, looked for jobs, and was in bed by 9 (I had to be to work by 6am) even then I doubt I would've gone out Society makes you think you have to do something on a certain day or else you're an outcast but, whatever. End of my little society rant. Other than that. Meh, surviving.

Been looking for new work and the US job market still sucks. Out of this recession my ass. NO ONE is hiring, and if there is an opening triple digit amounts of people apply to it. Agreed. I just saw an article in my local newspaper that talked about how the recovery seems to have fizzled out. My only thought was "Duh!!! Any normal human being living in this economy could have told you that!!" My mom, with 25 years of experience at her job, was laid off in May. She has had at least 2-3 interviews every week and almost two months later still doesn't have a job. She didn't believe me when I told her how hard it was. She accused me of being lazy and lying about how many apps I've turned in. Now she gets it. I just signed up with another temp agency. They have 59 jobs within 50 miles of my home that are looking for people. I'm not qualified for a single one of them. Most of them are jobs like Senior Analyst or Accountant. Even the few entry level positions they have listed require experience and training that I just don't have. It's so frustrating! Yeah, there are jobs out there, just not jobs I can do or that want someone like me.

Ouch, thats the worst. (about your mom)
A coworker of my sisters got let go on their birthday. That's just low what these companies are doing these days
From December to now I must've turned in applications to 30 different restaurants. In May I've been hitting up places that have zero skill requirement (I've been a chef for 8 years, its been my only job. Started when I was 17, no other skills besides a two year in Graphic Deisgn and most design studios won't even look at you if you don't have a 4 year) like overnight stock at Target and Sams Club, Cashier at grocery stores.
I'd sort through garbage for recycling if they asked me to.
I have till November/December to find work.
EDIT If they have a data entry job for you I'd say take it. You need a basic understanding of Word and Excel other than that you're golden

Excel is the problem. I have no experience with that at all and everyone seems to want at least 1-2 years of that.

Excel is the problem. I have no experience with that at all and everyone seems to want at least 1-2 years of that. My advice is to use the free Office software suite, OpenOffice, to get you started with that experience then. If you happen to have experience that isn't exactly 1-2 years but you know what you're doing just as well, if not better, than someone who does, well, no one's going to care. There are tutorials available for both OpenOffice Calc (OpenOffice's version of Excel) and for Microsoft Excel itself, and if nothing else, just download the trial for Excel and use that or the web-based version while going through the tutorials (provided the examples in the tutorials work on the limited web version). Excel really isn't anything special from a word processor other than that it's used for making spreadsheets and using formulas to automate cells within that spreadsheet. After using the two for a while, you'll start to find similarities between the two that should make it easy to jump into Excel. It really all depends on what works best for you. Don't be daunted by it, it'll come quickly enough to you once you get into it. Hope that'll help.

I have Open Office and I've tried to use the Excel program that's on it, but I just can't figure it out. I'm not usually so stupid with computers, but spreadsheets have always been confusing for me.
And considering my mom, with 25 years of such experience, hasn't been able to find a job, I don't have much hope that I'll be able to in the next five weeks. I'll keep applying for jobs, but I'm just not very hopeful at this point, not after 9 months of applying.

I'm currently insanely busy with school stuff right now. I'm supposed to graduate in less than three weeks now. I also have an interview at Laika (the studio that made the movie Coraline) tuesday. Apparently they are hiring people on for there next feature. Which would be frakin awesome! The position is "Editorial Apprentice". It would mean full time employment for at least the next 2 or 3 years. I was referred to them, so hopefully that gives me an upper hand. I'm not gonna get my hopes up, but if I don't get that job, I'm going to kill myself. jk. Got a phone # and a resulting date this coming Saturday too! Which despite the fact I just turned 30 is a big thing for me. I never really pursue femaliens, as I don't have the balls, but there is this girl that intermittently comes into the cafe that I work at, that I've always wanted to ask out, and I figured if I got that job at Laika, I'd never see her again. So I just shit my pants and dove right in. She was excited, so I probably should have tried months and months ago. Oh well, better late then never.
