I personal have never liked Silent Hill: The Room, why? Cause well... it's just so non silent hill-ish. I understand that it wasn't made it be part of the series in the beginning, but really... it's just such a random attachment to the series.
...and burping nurses?

Well like you said, it did start life as a non-Silent Hill game, so that is somewhat understandable. ;P I personally liked how detached it felt, it suceeded in making it feel like the apartment really was far from the town and made the downright oddness seem that little bit more intimidating in how far it's influence could spread, and gave me even more reason to wonder how and why the hell it was happening. The re-running of areas was a bit of an annoyance but at the same time i enjoyed how hideously unsafe everywhere felt when you went back and realised that the first time 'round was a calm stroll in the park. I was a bit meh at the number of people you see and meet at first too for some reason, that was remidied fairly quickly though. ......i have no clue what to think of the burping wenches. Also i don't really know what to call them, 'cause they are clearly not nursey. I do like the design of them though, and the rubberhead monkeymen too tbh, but the sounds they make all leave much to be desired. I agree that it felt very much apart from say, 1 or 3, but i would say that it is on about the same level as SH2 for me, as neither are to the Alessa/cheryl/heather/santa plotline.(lets face it, if 3 came out before 2 then i bet there would have been a world of "OMGWTF"s flying around about how random an addition SH2 was and how it had none of the plot of the previous games.) I feel it managed very much against the odds to fit in as a "true" part of the series while being bold enough to introduce very seperate aspects to the aforementioned. I still class it alongside SH2 in my favourites. ;D

Ah, the good old SH4 debate. I myself really liked The Room because it was different from the other games, very different. And like Pseudo said, I also liked the fact that the town's influence could spread to an apartment building so far from Silent Hill, and that definitely made it creepier to me.
As for being a "true" part of the series, I guess not in the sense that only a game that truly belonged there would have to be set in the actual town of Silent Hill, but that's just my opinion.

I liked SH4 because it was so different from the others. Honestly, I love it when people go against their own pre-set standards.

As a game on it's own, not Silent Hill: The Room, but just The Room, I think it was a great game. Yeah I guess there not really nurses, though they're some kind of demonic women thing... I prefer the ghost over the animals and other monsters though. The game /is/ creepy and I enjoyed watching people play it D: *Spoilers a head?*
But I did NOT enjoy the random (Crap crap, what is his name? Walter?) guy with guns. I understand that he has purpose and is important... but I was turned off by running out of no where and having him be shooting at you,

I loved the game all in all but ... seriously ... the constant runing from ghosts and Walter thing? NO. That brought tention but also brought frustration and sheer disliking in runing in circles from a mad man
And also, since I kill everything in every game I obviously hated the immortal "simple" ghosts >_<

I didn't like Silent Hill 4: The Room because of the game play. The act that it wasn't original a Silent Hill game didn't bother me... It lead to a different point of view on the Silent Hill story.

I love SH4. It's my best friends favorite Silent Hill too.
Also one I have a lot of gripes with. I remember when it was first announced they made it sound completely different than it was. The trailers didn't help either. The games trailers were more Silent Hill looking and sounding than the actual game was!
This is the Silent Hill that was originally supposed to have real time world transitions. That was one of the first things they announced about the game.
First of all the ambience in the game for the most part was very tame. Second, the graphics were worse than SH3s. Third, the second time around you go through the levels could've used a hell of a lot more variety and change! The stair wells were beautiful but the second time environments were still rather tame.
Fourth, what the hell is with the apartment? Sure it's creepy after a while but couldn't they have made it truely a threat? Why didn't the apartment become like it was in the dream at the beginning of the game or worse? Why the hell wasn't I terrified to even THINK of coming back there? Why wasn't I forced into those decisions? Instead we get creepy hauntings that're pretty easy to deal with and not that intimidating. I've dealt with scarier hauntings in real life.
Despite my gripes and it's always easier to bitch than compliment, the game was pretty awesome in the end. The OST is amazing, I do like the story and how it progresses. It's a lot of fun for me to play. I just hate it when a game with so much potential (admit is SH4 could've been one of the best ones) falls that short.
In the end what pissed me off the most is how amazing the trailers looked and how little the game in the end felt like the game they were advertising.
Ironically of the biggest gripes people seem to have is the Ghosts. They never bothered me. I found them easy to avoid and they just weren't in the game enough to piss me off. I just enjoyed that little bit of atmosphere they added to the game. So what if they're unkillable? Avoid them. They do no damage and it's not like to beat the game you need to run head first into them. The ghost bosses during the second times can be a real bitch sometimes though. Sometimes they just don't go down and don't want those swords stuck in them. I remember fighting Jasper for an hour once because he just W O U L D N O T stay down.

I loved the room when I was in the room... it was all the other stuff I didn't really care for. Really, I thought about half the game was pretty good, it was the really odd setup for backtracking that screwed everything up. The story itself was nice.
Walter ended up looking like a homeless man and that was disappointing to me.

Silent Hill 4 had a good story line in my opinion but i thought it was pritty hard, and those puppet things got on my nerves and made me not wanna play it .. so i just liked the story.

@ manifestationoflov- "Puppet things"? Do you perhaps mean the ghosts that chase you around? If so then yeah, they were a pain in the arse.>_<;
I've just played through Homecoming and i'll say this much, it has made me love the whole of SH4 a hell of a lot more than before.XD I will probably post my thoughts on the game when i calm down a little. >_>

Meh, it certainly wasn't my favourite SH. In fact it's fair to say it's my LEAST favourite. But I still thouroughly enjoyed it. The characters were entertaining (Henry FTW!) the story interesting and the gameplay itself was easy to adjust to.
And as always, Akira Yamaoka outdoes himself with the soundtrack. The only thing I will say though is what is up with the dancing baby straight out of Ally McBeal?

I just don't like the gameplay. It's too hard, especially in the later stages because of F-ING EILEEN. I swear, stupid AI is stupid.
