I hated the ghosts. I don't like enemies you can't destroy. That seems kind of pointless in a game like this, as if their only purpose is to irritate you. And to me that's...well, irritating! Not fun.

Well like you said, it did start life as a non-Silent Hill game, so that is somewhat understandable. ;P I personally liked how detached it felt, it suceeded in making it feel like the apartment really was far from the town and made the downright oddness seem that little bit more intimidating in how far it's influence could spread, and gave me even more reason to wonder how and why the hell it was happening. The re-running of areas was a bit of an annoyance but at the same time i enjoyed how hideously unsafe everywhere felt when you went back and realised that the first time 'round was a calm stroll in the park. I was a bit meh at the number of people you see and meet at first too for some reason, that was remidied fairly quickly though. ......i have no clue what to think of the burping wenches. Also i don't really know what to call them, 'cause they are clearly not nursey. I do like the design of them though, and the rubberhead monkeymen too tbh, but the sounds they make all leave much to be desired. I agree that it felt very much apart from say, 1 or 3, but i would say that it is on about the same level as SH2 for me, as neither are to the Alessa/cheryl/heather/santa plotline.(lets face it, if 3 came out before 2 then i bet there would have been a world of "OMGWTF"s flying around about how random an addition SH2 was and how it had none of the plot of the previous games.) I feel it managed very much against the odds to fit in as a "true" part of the series while being bold enough to introduce very seperate aspects to the aforementioned. I still class it alongside SH2 in my favourites. ;D Actually if you follow the script closely and read the stuff in the notes you pickup, there are a lot of references to SH 2. IF you follow the whole story line SH1 and 3 are linked, and SH24 are linked. The outsider is Silent Hill Home Coming. However, SH5 (Home Coming, really feels like it is events that happened before the series took off in SH1!!

katran: I agree, I freaking hated those ghosts. Also those bastard that slap you down when you go up the escalators. It kinda killed the atmosphere for me, cause it was nauseatingly repetitive.

Yeah, the escalator guys finally made me give up on my second play-through. Just too irritating and not worth it. Not when all the other SH games offer so much re-playability.

I think there was ONE time where I played Silent Hill 4 and I actually liked the escalator part. ONCE. The ghosts never really bothered me, I enjoyed fighting the later ones, with Eileen's help. Walter kinda pissed me off, because there was really NO WAY to stop him, although I like how in one apartment room he appears behind the bars and tries to shoot you as you run past, and I like the final boss, one of the better boss fights in the series really. I also didn't mind the inventory constraints. Or the fact that you do levels twice.
No, I just didn't find the game compelling. Maybe it was that the game felt less in depth with the characters, or that Henry's voice actor was just annoying, or that so much of the game was told in memos, or that there wasn't enough background music, or too much recycling of old sounds and new sounds that aren't very good, or crappy animations, or burping nurses, or graphics clearly not as good as 3 and in my opinion not as likable as 1 or 2, or that the game would spam annoying little enemies like hummers and treamers, or that you had to run away from Eileen as fast as you could to ditch her, or that the stop-motion scenes just didn't work most of the time, or that Henry did all the maps and they didn't look as interesing as the old games, or that the controls weren't the same as the old games and didn't feel as tight, or that in first person sometimes you'd select the wrong things . . . I guess lots of things bugged me about the game. I don't hate it, but it's my least favorite . . . out of the ones I've played (still haven't got to Homecoming or Shattered Memories).

Just that huh? I agree on most of those things. I actually kinda like the "in the apartment" business. Liked the whole being trapped in the apartment, and having to look out windows etc. Wish more gameplay could have somehow been incorporated into that. I really did hate Walter and the multiple play through of levels though. I think if I ever get some time, I'm gonna play through Shattered Mammaries (haven't had any time to go through it) And play through SH3 again. And 2 of course.

I would've liked being in the apartment more if the changes were even more dramatic and I didn't have to be there so often.
I'm probably going to buy Shattered Memories for ps2 soon . . . but right now I have to get a friend of mine a birthday present. (She complains about not finding a game in stores when it's 10 bucks on Amazon. Yeesh. But it makes things easy for me.) It might be a while before I get a ps3 and play Homecoming.
If I like both of these games better than 4, they won't be disappointments. That's how I looked at Origins. I liked it a bit better than 4, so I considered it not a disappointment. Still, I've heard some crummy things about Homecoming, and my friends are really skeptical about Shattered Memories (I want to prove them wrong, because I like the sound of it.)
