Hi everyone. I always had mixed views on Homecoming and so it seems do the general community. Just to set things straight, I'm a bit of an old-school fan of SH, my favourite game is SH2 but I also kinda enjoyed SH4. Normally I wouldnt hesitate to rush straight to the shop and pay full price for a new SH game....but not this one. Something is stopping me, perhaps the anticipation of the disappoint in seeing my favourite gameworld being beefed up ala American movie-horror cliche awfulness. I've even watched a few vids on youtube, avoiding spoilers where possible, but even now I cant decide if its the game for me and whether its worth it. But then again, part of me loathes the idea of not playing a new SH game! So for those who have played this game, please rank this game for me. Any comments would be good, but please refrain from spoliers, just in case I play this damn game that has me torn in two

A lot of people loath it and a lot of people love it. I fall into the love it category. Although it uses a lot more violence than previous installments and also seems to be very American horror movie-esque I still thinks it's a damn good game. Most people seem to dislike the American influence over the game but if they're going to blame someone blame Team Silent for splitting up.
Anyway, I thought it was generally good, some parts were weak such as a specific plot point but I don't think it's anything to worry about. I liked the otherworld shifts taken from the movie and the monsters were pretty tough making it more challenging. The puzzles weren't too difficult (I didn't use a walkthrough like I usually do) and despite this game focusing on American aspects of horror rather than traditional Japanese aspects of horror it's still quite scary, I jumped a couple of times at monsters popping up from nowhere -_-
Don't let the fact it's been heavily influenced by horror movies ruin it for you like some people have. It's really not that big a deal. People blow things out of proportion I think, so even those who don't particularly like the game can find good things about it. I'd recommend buying it and giving it a try, if it's not your cup of tea then just return it or swap it.

My overall opinion is that it's worth playing and there are moments of greatness in it, but overall it's crippled by its desire to be a part of the series and its reference to certain Western horror films. In other words, it sometimes feels like it's trying too hard to get the fan's approval and as a result it isn't as good as the other games in the series.
I'd definitely recommend getting it though so you can see for yourself; don't be swayed too much by other's opinions. That's how i approached it and to be honest i'm glad I did. It is still an entertaining game and some bits are really very well done (I did make a review of it but it contains a whole lot of spoilers, so you probably shouldn't read it XD); it's just not as good as the others.

I've only played up to the first boss battle (which I have yet to actually do), but so far I'm enjoying it. I refrained from voting since I haven't finished the game, but so far I'm not at all sorry I bought it. Twice I've had to quit playing because I was just too scared to continue for awhile. I'm not usually like that with games. I think SH2 was the only other SH game that I had to do that with.

I enjoyed it. Though I agree with what was said earlier in that it's trying too hard to become like previous games that it seems to hinder it's creative ability but I'd blame both Konami and some of the fanbase Silent Hill has for that to be honest.
My only real complaint was the last hour of the game and the endings to the game. They felt rushed and I'm not sure the throwback to certain American horror movies that shall remain nameless was a good idea. It seemed out of place and (without spoiling anything) even out of character, though it could be justified to an extent. The endings felt rushed and unsatisfying. I'm not sure if it was a lack of development time or what but they needed fleshing out bad.
Don't listen to anyone who says it's become "RE4ied" though. It's not. While there is a bit more of an emphasis on action, the game is anything but a shooter. Silent Hill 2 even is more of a shooter since I usually find enough ammo to shoot any enemies I see and still have plenty left over for bosses. In Homecoming, you have a limit to the max ammo for a certain weapon you can carry which effectively limits your use of guns. Most of the time, you'll be relying on melee weapons (even on bosses) and different melee weapons are more effective on some enemies more than others. Enemies can also take a lot more hits and are a bit more dangerous than past SH enemies but there is usually a strategy to these enemies and once you figure out the pattern they are pretty easy to dispatch.
I'd recommend it. It's not amazing or anything and it has it's flaws but it's a solid enough game in it's own right and a lot of the major issues I have with the game, I can put down to Konami and/or the fans being mostly at fault.

I must admit Im quite surprised by the feedback so far. I was expecting a lot more negative. Thanks for the reviews so far guys (and girls) its good to hear reviews that dont just want to kiss the butt of the genre and say its good just because its called Silent Hill. Maybe I'll crack open the purse afer all. Now....anyone want to give their honest opinion of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resi 5? We'll leave that for another forum thread shall we?

i thought SHH was an amazing game. great to add to any ones SH collection. i like it when silent hill takes a new aproach on things it keeps things fresh and creepy. the difficulty level was fine for me and the lessesned ammo answered a prayer so this game was exactly what i wanted. on the other hand very difficult movments, wepons not working, and needlers that took 10 trys to kill made the game soem what annoying and difficult. teh darkness was a problem not just becuase of not being able to see but i would have loved to see the textures and art owrk put into this game..but alas i cant . good game just a few bad choices made during final runthrough.

I won't spoil it here but I liked the IDEA of the plot. The idea was good and could've been great had the execution been better.
I also didn't like the fact that Homecoming had a cast that totaled more than the other previous games combined. Felt like a town meeting or something

I played it for a few hours and got stuck. I haven't really gone back to it yet. I think about it, but then end up playing Fallout or something. So, I have a lukewarm opinion of the game. I will eventually finish it, but I have no idea when.

Short opinion:
Buy it, it's great even if not as good as other Sh's.
Sh2 > Sh3 > Sh1 > Sh0 > ShH > Sh4
And I loved Sh4. Heck, they are all great!

Unless you have to add every Silent Hill game to your collection, I'd suggest borrowing from a friend would be best.
After the first play, I didn't really feel the urge to go back to this one, though I did give it another round (as I believe most games really show their colours during during another play)and got halfway through before loaning it to a friend. It had a few moments which felt quite atmospheric, but to me, the rest of it just felt empty and sluggish, and not in the same manner as other SH titles.
If you haven't already played it, then I suggest you do, because despite this one not ticking all the boxes for me, it might just be the breath of fresh air some fans have been waiting for.

Good, but flawed. As Vaco said, the concept was stronger than the actual outcome. The final act was just messy. Though I wont deny, it drew me in to completion, and I don't feel like I wasted my time. I'd say rent it, get it cheap, or borrow it from a friend. Any of those options is fine.

I got really lucky and picked up a copy for £5 last week, so I couldnt really turn down an a chance like that :-)
I dont know how far into it I am, but so far the only thing thats annoyed me is a couple fo stupid design issues, limited ammo and an inability to outrun dogs. Other than that Im really liking it.
I just got the to the key Shepards house attic.....but as the 7th Guest put the fear of god into me with regards to attics I had to stop playing and go to bed.

I got it a few weeks ago,and I am frustrated by it.Ammunition and health items are way too scarce,in my opinion. And the monsters I find to be tougher than anything we saw in the previous games.Plus you go an eternity between save points.

I just wanted to post an updated review, since I hadn't finished the game at my last post. I liked the game okay. Not my favorite by far, but better than SH4 in my opinion. Probably not one I'd play over and over again, like 2 or 3, but I like it well enough.
Word to the wise: try and get the UFO ending your first time through. It will give you a weapon on your next play-through that will help immensely.
