Ah, St. Aatos, but what if they stick to go with this. And ultimatley end up "reimagining" Silent Hill 2 & 3 in the same way? DON'T EVEN GO THERE.

I'm really disappointed that they're remaking SH1. However I will also be disappointed if this remake does not include Harry slipping over in the ice with comic sound effects.

Lol, they should do that for the laughs, just like Raiden slipping on the bird poo in MGS2. It'll be comedy gold. LAWLZ! It's like one big marketing scheme to sell the iPhone I can imagine Harry walking through the town and everytime he needs his map, pulling out his trusty iPhone and making comments such as "GPS mapping, support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new App Store, iPhone 3G puts even more features at my fingertips"

What? no combat? A silent hill game with no violence? That way madness lies!

I'm eager to play it after reading the main article in the high-res scans.
Still on the fence about no combat whatsoever, though. Even weak, desperate "pitiful knife against zombie a la Resident Evil 1/2" would be better than "oh, you just can't fight at all for some unexplainable reason." What, does Harry not have arms? Even a cornered animal fights back eventually, even if it is a losing battle.
I like that the monsters should make more sense. Better than running from the strange flying purple.....thing and bizarre feral ape.
No reason to have changed the original character's appearance, though. The original Harry Mason design had very much a "John Doe" look about him. You couldn't tell what he did, or much of anything else about him for that matter, from the original design. It allowed him to be anybody, making it much more understandable why he didn't hit from any distance every time he shot or why he'd fall down high steps, etc.
He looks too stereotypical of a bookworm now. A minor change like that can be a big deal, and I don't think Climax should have changed that one small detail.
If they can pull off a sense of isolation even with having a cell phone (which can mysteriously, what, download apps but not communicate with the outside world?), then I'd be for that. Otherwise, gimme a damn point-and-shoot camera, note pad, and map and chuck me into Nowheresville.
Overall, I'm going to be optimistic about it. Reserved and cautious, but optimistic nonetheless.

Pretty much how I feel about it. I'm actually surprised so many have had a negative backlash towards this... it should come no surprise that this game would not be canon. It doesn't even connect well with ORIGINS, nevermind the rest of the series. In all honesty I'm seeing this game as a fun little experiment of which some elements may come of use in a later, canon game. I mean I guess it's not exactly wise to do this experiment in a remake/reimagining of the original game so I do understand to a point but I also think there is too much of a big deal over it. To be honest, does SH 1 even make sense anyway? Think about this for a moment. Imagine being completely new to the Silent Hill series, you have no idea what to expect from it and you decide to start from the beginning of the series. Would you even know that the monsters are manifestations of Alessa's fears? Would any ending except the worst ending even make any sense unless you played Silent Hill 3? As far as I recall, there isn't really anything in the original game indicating any of this. Most of the things we know about the original game, including symbolism was effectively retconned onto the game, both through official materials (future SH games, specifically SH 3 and Lost Memories) and unofficial fan theories. This was something I noticed when I watched L0rd Vega's Blind Run Lets Play of Silent Hill 1 on youtube (he basically never played the games before and had no clue what to expect, he's done such Lets Plays of Silent Hill 1 and 2 and is currently going through an LP of Silent Hill 3). Seeing things from a complete newbie perspective, it made me realize not only how frustrating the original game was but also how little sense anything made, even down to the puzzles. In fact I'm pretty sure Vega himself said that even though SH 2 had a far deeper story than SH 1, it still managed to be much more coherent than SH 1. Which to me, speaks volumes about how "unfriendly" the original game is. I guess where I'm trying to go with this is that a remake like this probably isn't wise... but on the otherhand, strictly considering both this game and SH 1 as separate from the other games, it's not THAT big a deal. Even if this game does get deemed canon, I can actually think of a few ways as to how it could fit into the series while SH 1 remains as what truly happened. For example this could be what Harry experiences right before the Missionary in SH 3 kills him. Yes it's a bit of a cop out and a rip off from SH 1's bad ending and Jacob's Ladder but it's a possibility. It could also be Heather's fragmented memories of what she believes happened in SH 1 as her previous life becomes more dominant in her current life, hence the name "Shattered Memories". We simply do not know enough at this point and it just seems kinda silly IMO to fly off the handle like this until we at least know more. This is just my thoughts into this anyway.

I just finished SH1 again and even I got a little bewildered sometimes, even after playing through it numerous times before so I have to agree. If it weren't for reading up on fan theories and such I would still not have a clue what the real plot was about.

I liked how vague the first one was. You were forced to draw your own conclusions based on in game info and what you think happened.
Thats what annoys me with the younger generations, they want everything spoon fed to them. God forbid they think for themselves or something be left unresolved

It was much more fun to come to my own conclusions about the other games than the first, I thought SH1 was too vague. Without the third game to back up points made in the first game I found myself becoming really confused, like there wasn't enough information on Alessa being burned alive or Lisa's addiciton to White Claudia. For a yonger audience it would be very hard to understand (I know the game isn't aimed at kids but still).

Silent Hill 2 left a lot to speculate and it was fun... yet at the same time it was still coherent and easy to get the general gist of. I really cannot say the same for SH 1. There is a fine line between letting players speculate about things in the game and just not revealing ANYTHING, leaving the player confused, not knowing where to even begin to speculate (which is really, bad story telling). Coupled with the fact that Silent Hill 1 isn't that deep as a stand alone game to begin with (again, most of the depth the game has was added on either through SH 3, Lost Memories or fan theories), the experience is kinda tarnished and becomes rather forgettable IMO.

After sitting on this for a while, I'm not gonna lie, I'm really excited to play this. I'm excited to see exactly what they did with it, the differences etc. It'll be fun to play SH1 all over again as something completely new at the same time. Plus it'll be really cool seeing all the different ways to play the game. I can sit friends down and make them make the choices etc. It's all going to be one huge mindfuck, especially when things are so familiar to some of us. I like that.
The game sounds like it's going to be amazing. I also really liked Origins so I have faith they know what they're doing. I really don't think they'd be doing this if they weren't especially confident about what they were doing.
However, I'm still not sure how much I like them doing this at the same time. It still feels violating in a way. Maybe that's a good thing in a Silent Hillish way? Bleh... guess in the end we'll see.

Whoa.. I remember myself being the minority about SH and how it went off road. Give it a chance, you're being too negative and such was all we were getting.
Which makes me feel funny since now there's a lot of you saying SH is dead, while I kinda see some spark in this wiimake.
It's not like a dreamed SH is coming to life.. but I see some potential in there. Frankly when it's come to the point that not SH but the genre itself faces extinction you'll take anything. If it has to be no battle-no battle at all in order to avoid an action oriented game and such I'll take it. If it has to be a wii game cause thats how they can put some fresh ideas that work for the genre and not against it I'll take it. If it has to be over the dead, raped, badly copied, wrong turn taken, body of SH and still mess with SH1 I'll take it. What's the reason anymore not to?
As usual though I have my 3-4 basic concerns that don't ever change.
- Monsters... they have to be special... Ito special... but can't judge as the screens don't provide much. PH must not appear as always. - No combat? I've already commented on that. And as I've always said SH was introduced as horror-adventure, not action-horror.. not even survival-horror to be exact. - Puzzles. There have to be there... and not collect pieces 1-2-3 combine crap.. The key in the can thing mentioned in the scans sure doesn't count as a puzzle in my books but at least it's something different and puts your brain into work even a bit. I want my riddles and if climax or whoever makes this thing is worried about those who can't be arsed to put aside the controller and think, either provide them with a walkthrough in the box, a skip option or implement a hard mode-easy mode, I don't care.. put them in.
I'm not so sure about the snow thing.. to tell the truth I've always wanted bad weather to make an appearance in SH. But It was rain I was always thinking about. I thought it could replace fog in the limited visibility department and serve well in other aspects as feeling cold,no shelter, sadness, mood etc. Maybe snow can serve as well in those... but as the otherworld I'm not sure...
But all in all I'm somewhat happy with what we got so far. We're getting something different for a change it seems, again even if it messes with sh1. At least it seems to go into good territory. I don't even care about canon anymore after all the things I've seen over the past years. They gave away the franchise, the cashed over SH's body, over PH, arcades, cellphones, and whatnot. If I'm getting a good game that at least stays true to the roots I'll have it... over a dead space/re4-5 Sh; GLADLY
