Cenobite, you really can't compare REmake (Great, amazing remake) to this.
Why?
First off, REmake kept most of the stuff, continuing the same story, and only added a few more places to go, aswell as Lisa Trevor. Otherwise, it was the exact same game really.
Now, why can't you compare them? First off, they are adding more new PROPER CHARACTERS (A bar-keep, an a mysterious doctor named Dr. K, I hope to God it's Kaufman, or I will scream). They TAKE AWAY combat completly. So now you can only run from the enemies, but luckily enough, you can watch behind Harry's shoulder and see how the enemies are crawling over cars and jumping across rooftops to get to you.
Then, they take away the HELLISH Otherworld and REPLACE it with fucking ice. ICE!
Yes, it might turn out decent. But this isn't a remake, this is a reimagining, which basically reimagines the entire series in that sense. It would NOT surprise me at all if they do the same to SH2 and SH3, only to make it fit into this new way of doing Silent Hill.
Why would they? Because all the new fans buying it, won't recognize the Silent Hill from this one, in the older ones. So to make the series more accessible in the future, they reimagine all of them. I'm not saying it WILL happen, but it would NOT surprise me at all.

Just discovered this game! I think it can be pretty interesting to see a new take on the first game. About the Otherworld changes: I've always wanted to see a new otherworld, because I think the Otherworld shouldn't look the same for different people. SH:H let me down with their Otherworld version, it was just more of the same. An Icy Otherworld seems like it could be pretty fresh. But I think you people dislike it because it's "taking the place of the original Otherworld in SH1", right? I can understand that. But it's not like the first game will cease to exist.
I'm all for new and fresh things. The original Team Silent was doing that with SH4 (even not being the best, it was still good enough). But then they quit and Climax came doing more of the same (reason I didn't like SH:O, and later SH:H much. Too familiar. Same ol', same ol'.) But I understand the problem of being a "re-imagining" of the first. They should just make a new game, with new characters, and then have all the fresh stuff.
I'll probably give it a try if I can fix my PS2 someday. Btw, where are you people seeing all this info about the Otherworld and character's looks? I've only found Harry's pic on the net. :/

I'm all for making things new and fresh, if it's a new game. But geez, the changes in this aren't needed. That's just my opinion. Graphically update it, add some new areas possibly. Maybe even some new enemies. But taking away combat, making the other world a freezer... I just cannot agree with. Again, that's my personal view of it. It just makes no sense to me to change so much in a game that already had the basics down well. Who wants to bet a Pyramid Head or a reference pops up in this game?

imho I would have just had updated graphics, a few new areas to explore that you didn't get to in the original, better combat controls and you know what? maybe get into some areas in the first one which you couldn't in the original. That would be all really and tidy up the dialogue.
Again new SHSM looks to be interesting but I want to see how much the mess up the story and how much changes there will be, fair enough SH:O wasn't the best but at least that was still enjoyable story bit iffy in places at least they didn't totally screw that over

I'm just happy it will be on PS2. That's all I have, I havn't the money for anything new. Sides, Harry still looks a lot like Harry, and he will always be THE MAN for me.

I'm all for changes where the franchise is right now. SH has been pretty explored already, and 3 felt like 1 and Origins felt like a little of both. Homecoming took too much "inspiration" from the film. I like the hellish look of the otherworld etc, but I'd love to see something different, both aesthetic and story wise. It makes for something fresh and there's always the possibility something really good can come out of it. What I don't like is the fact these changes right now are being made into an "alternate SH1 game". It should be a fresh story with other characters. I really, really dislike that.
Oh well, we'll probably see another good and innovative SH game one day. It may take decades, but who knows. I still have faith. XD
The saddest part of all this is that with the SIlent Hill franchise going down, so does the forums. The good ol' forum died, and it seems this one gets no new visitors. I barely see anyone online. *sigh* I miss the old days. :/

Don't worry, I'm sure the tags The Crimson One and sunset added in the milk carton members thread will see new members fighting to join this place ^_~
I'm just glad this game won't be action oriented. As long as the SH franchise doesn't go all Resi Evil and replace the horror elements with guns and lying figures riding motorcycles I'll be a happy bunny.

The day Pyramid Head steps out with the Great Bazooka, Silent Hill will be officially dead to me.

All I know It's I'm gonna wait until the game has been out for some time and then you guys will tell us all how it is AFTER you've gotten your hands on it.
I've learned my lesson with SHH and SHO, I used to dread the fact that they are american made, but now that I could actually PLAY them, I can't imagine the Silent Hill universe without Travis' bottomless pants and Alex's crazy combos now, they've earned their place in underworld. I say let's give them a break until the damn game is out.
(I agree though, the iceworld looks like a pretty rotten idea).

I'm really looking forward to this game.
I disliked Homecoming...quite a bit. I thought Origins was a good addition to the series despite some questionable gameplay decisions. And yet I still think Climax is on the right track with this game. Simply because I like the different direction it's taking. I used to do this "DON'T TOUCH MY [INSERT SERIES HERE]!" thing too. But in the last few years (blame MGS) I've come to realize a something...
It's unavoidable. As much as we like to talk to about our reverence for Team Silent they don't want the series anymore. End of story. Whatever team takes the mantle whether they be American, British, or Anglo-Afri-Swedgian THEY will have control. Should we accept a bad game because of that. Hell no. But should we resist everything they do because they aren't the original creators? Again...hell no. What do we gain by limiting ourselves to the past? It is fine and natural to revere what has come before. It is not acceptable in my view to take that reverence and use it as a riot shield against the impending future of the series.
What we have here a new ideas, fresh ideas, a nightmare world that doesn't look just like the others, a story that evolves dynamically, a level of interactivity we haven't seen before, a protaganist that doesn't stumble upon 3 different varieities of firearm, knows how to load and shoot them, finds bullets for them in the most of random of places, no problems storing them, etc. etc. (And someone already mentioned Travis's TV and toaster heavy pockets so...). A man who is scared, a man who runs, runs from the terrible danger and overwhelming fear we should all be feeling as we play a game like this. Lead on by the determination to find his lost child...alone in a world he can't understand but that seems to know him all too well.
I'm hyped for this game. Hyped enough to buy a Wii for the full experience? Umm...We'll see about that. Can this be an utter disappointment and complete crapfest? Of course it can! Am I going to call it that before I get my hands on it? No way. Neither will I call it genius. Although the concept and the approach have me very very interested. All I know is that I will be keeping an open mind as I watch this game develop. I hope those who are skeptical and fearful (with reason) can try to let your guard down a little and realize that no matter how this turns out it will not be what you've seen before...and that's the way things should be.

Totally agreed ^. I used to count myself among those who shield themselves from incoming changes in the games and media I love, but I've gladly witnessed very pleasant surprises from the least expected sources on that matter.
Instant hate has never been a good thing, neither in games or in real life; who knows? it might turn out to be better than the original!! *ducks and wears militar helmet"
