Meh, I'm not holding my breath on a sequel, bad or otherwise. There have been so many "confirmations" over the years that fell through. Until I hear filming has actually started, I won't believe anything.
That said, I really liked the first film and hope they do make a sequel. Of course, I hadn't played the games or even knew much of anything about them before seeing the film, so I had no pre-conceived ideas to have ruined. Had I been a fan of the games before seeing the film, I'm sure I'd feel the same about it as a lot of others on here (for the same reasons I hated Troy and couldn't even finish the Beowulf film).
I wasn't able to get anything to come up with the "more accessible" link a couple of pages back so I don't know what's up with that article or what it said. Can someone enlighten me.
All that said, if there ever is a sequel I would personally love to see Guillermo del Toro direct it. Although I do have to say that I think Christophe Gans was spot-on with the atmosphere in the first film. He got that right, imho.

There was an article I read that said Don Carmody said that they were going to make the sequel "more accessible" to moviegoers, saying something along the lines of that they can't make for only the fans because we are "expensive".

Then sh*t, don't make it based on Silent Hill then! If what the Silent Hill fans want out of the movie is too expensive, don't make the freaking movie, there's no point! Who the hell is making this movie anyway!? Does he LIKE the games!? Does he PLAY games!?
Honestly, I don't care if the special effects are out of the fifties. The otherworld shifts don't have to be in real time, the character can pass out and wake up there like in the game. The monsters can just be actors in dumb looking suits as long as the protagonist actually FIGHTS them.

Well, it's not so much that SH fans are expensive, it's that it's too expensive to make a film specifically for a relatively small group of people. It's just not good business sense. If they make the films only for those who have played the games, they're going to miss out on a bigger market and lose money. Then there definitely won't be any more films because no studio will see them as financially viable. Like it or not, films based on games are almost financially required to try and reach a broader audience. And that's not always a bad thing. I can tell you I had zero interest whatsoever in the games until I saw the film. Had it not been for the film, I would not be a SH fan today.

Katran, you bring up a very good point, I guess we all have to brave a dip in the mainstream every now and then to stay relevant and to bring in some new blood.

Yes, that's the only reason that I prefer having the movie to not having the movie is that it brought in some good fans.

... it brought in some good fans. I'll take that as a compliment. Hopefully even if they make some changes with the sequel, they can still stay true to the overall spirit of the games. Some changes are unimportant or can even enhance the storyline. They just need to be careful.

I just think they're being greedy, aren't they? I mean, according to Box Office Mojo, they grossed their budget. They just want more money, I presume.

Almost all movie-makers are greedy and want money. And to be fair, that's true of most of us.
The ones who are truly in it for the art usually make small-budget art movies that hardly anyone gets to see.
