I was replaying SH4 the other day and I noticed a sheep on one of the spiral staircases. I think there was a discussion about it on the old forum, does anyone remember if it symbolises anything?

Oh those cagey utterly weird probably-the-best-part-of-the-game staircases?
...I didn't even notice a sheep.

Yea, I remember that. It's been a while.
There's a lot of weird shit on those staircases. They're one of my favorite parts in any Silent Hill game. Maybe it's all just fragmented bits of memories of Walter's and they've manifested themselves into some bizarre artsy staircases?
Not sure really. It's all random as hell.

Dude in the strategy guide said it was the scariest part of the game: "an overly large sheep"

Thanks for the replies everyone, I've been thinking about this and I've come up with a couple of ideas. It may represent how Walter feels about the Holy Mother sect after being tricked by Dahlia; that the cult members just follow orders. It could also represent the way in which Henry is just following Joseph's notes without really questioning anything. However I might just be finding meaning where there is no meaning to find.

I think you gave it a good shot Nat, I've never considered it having meaning until now.
Although I still wish to find the meaning of the Dancing Baby. I couldn't help think "This isn'y Alley McBeal?"

From a European-Christian POV sheep represent innocence and children/childhood. I am unaware of any Shinto or Buddhist usages of sheep so let's stick with what we know
The sheep is trapped in a small room, staring at a picture. No idea what the picture is but it does seem like a potent metaphor for an orphaned child, which supports Nat's first explanation
There is another room with a figure kneeling in supplication before another figure, which is almost definitely a continuation of the orphanage theme, and possibly a reference to molestation. The Fukuro figures may also continue this theme or may simply be there to make the game more SH
The baby throwing a tantrum is most likely meant to symbolize abandonment here, along with the broken dolls at the bottom of the staircase
However, these are simply my interpretations of the imagery. While they are consistent with the story, that doesn't make them correct...

Wow there was quite a few things on there with those camera hacks I had never seen before.
The camera on the stairwells is kind've frustrating since you can't really control it. It's obviously for effect though.

Hey, I didn't notice the fellows hanging on both sides of the cage, the one on the right has a striking resemblance with one of those in SH3, the one that appears in front of Heather right after she comes out from the room where the bathtub changes to the Dark Apt. Building; it's the guy carrying the doll/baby thingie, next to the wheelchair with yet another doll mummy on it.
I'll reply SH4 to see if it's the same or it just looks like it (yes I do have a lot of free time).

patient is right, it's kinda cute xD and those things on the floor are body pieces I think. It would have been a better reference if they were fetuses though.
