For me, it is more than one moment! But if I had to choose, it was when Pyramid Head chased James and Mary down that maze of hallways in the hospital to the elevator. I was screaming at the TV to "GO!!!GO!!!GO!!!" and I shook my controller like crazy! Ah good times!

It's very easy for me, and also involves Mr. PH. I found the Labyrith level to the be scariest, because of how he just pops up randomly. The scariest moment was when I went down to the ovalish area with the underhangers and into the room to get the Great Knife, then I came out expecting underhangers and ran right into PH! He stabbed me and I turned around and ran, totally freaked out. It was several more playthroughs before I did that again, I'm not sure I've ever even used the Great Knife.
I think the series' scary moment for me is the Giant Lizard opening its mouth, but this isn't too far off.
BTW, funny moment with dial-up, I was able to read everything SHSP wrote by the time the spoiler tag loaded and I wasn't able to see it anymore.

the toilot in the prison, where you knock on a cubicle and on your way out you hear what sounds like a nurse getting hit by a fallen safe or something
Back in the day where things could scare me, I miss those feelings.

From the beginning of the Historical Society to the end.
I was right mindfuckered after the hospital as it was. Scariest game I ever played by miles. Then this took it to a whole new level of what's happening to my brain?
I only played a little bit of Silent Hill 1 and Resident Evil games didn't exactly hit this level of psychological cataclysm.
Especially when you keep going farther and farther underground.
Best first time gaming experience ever?

Hm, that's easy, when I played SH1 back in 1999, it was a whole new awakening that brought me from my silly teenager RE fanatism to the real horror of Silent Hill.
The scariest moment in SH2 was all the historical society alright, specially the prison, those invisible chaps really play with yer mind the first time you hear them.
The sacariest of ALL SH is the mirror room in SH3 though, it's really creepy and stressing, resumes the very concept of the series.

Many things disturbed me greatly, but just downright scary?
It's tough to say what got to me the most. I didn't like when Pyramidhead knocked me down and I saw my health was in red.
Honestly, I think the scariest was when you first get the flashlight. In the beginning, when you know nothing of what's going to happen--you suddenly get jumped by a new monster and you're bound to be scared.
I think the monsters themselves were the scariest part. The lying figures, popping out from under cars... Pyramidhead, with his instant-kills... room full of roaches, mannequins being almost-invisible at times. Screaming nurses. Etc., etc.

I think I'm with Blacky on this one even though the entire game shook me completely unlike any game had before. I just came from the, at that time, scary Resident Evil games. Then played Silent Hill 2. I got to the Pyramid Head fight, couldn't beat it and had to have my brother sleep in my room that night because something had just messed me up. Probably everything. Even took a month or two before I played it again. But really, the bathroom in the prison was just terrible. I was playing the game for the second time and I had completely forgotten about it. So I just walked happy and cheering into the bathroom, knocked on some of the stalls and then started walking out when I didn't get a respond. Then the sound... that terrible sound... I had to put away the controller after I had saved it because it just shook me totally. Couldn't play again that night.

Agreed on the sound in the bathroom after knocking on the cubicle door, that literally made me jump the first time it happened, and even now when I know it's going to happen it still gets me somehow. I think also because those type of scares are so rare in Silent Hill, it worked so well (like when the lying figure runs out from under the car, completely unexpected and so effective). Also, Pyramid Head following you through the corridors with Maria was probably the most tense I've felt in the game. And in the area where you get the great knife, having the Mandarins crawling under the wire mesh and then almost running into PH was extremely frightening. The Abstract Daddies in the Hotel corridors were another highlight for me, it was so claustrophobic and you barely have time (or room) to kill them without nearly dying yourself. I love this game so much

The invisible prison monster hit the nail on the head for me. I still hate travelling through that place, it terrified me then and it terrifies me now. The hotel is a close second though. I hated having to go down the lift without my weapons and face all the nasty monsters lurking down there.

I remember being scared as hell right in the beginning when you arrive to town and see those blood marks on the floor and then that figure walking and disappearing in the fog. Really, I never got so scared in my life of videogames just like at that moment. Pyramid Head chasing James and Maria was too stressful and scary as well. Me and my brother were like "run stupid run!". Of course not to forget, those sounds when you knock on the door in a bathroom (do not remember where exactly) and you get the reply when you're leaving. Also, that creepy whisper voice in the apartments.

Call me slow, but I remember back right before the prison area, when James falls into the well. I just couldn't find the secret door for the life of me. The entire time, I was wondering if I'd done something wrong or if there was some kind of glitch (I hadn't saved for the longest time). Imagine my relief when I finally got out.
