So I'm currently working on my Thesis film, and wanted to learn how to do HDRI lighting. Here is the first test I did yesterday. Not entirely realistic, but getting there. I didn't have time to worry about blur etc to match depth of field, but you get the idea. I think the 3D sphere in the bottom left corner looks the best. Keep in mind I didn't take any time to composite, this is straight out of the 3D program.

I am slightly confused here... Did you render the entire pic or just the spheres?

Ah, sorry! The background was just a still frame from some video I shot. The only CG is the spheres. Just trying to match the real lighting.

My understanding of HDRI involves bracketing exposures with a wide angle lens on location. From your explanation, you didn't do that. I also know how to cheat that effect with a panorama render but you couldn't have used that technique either...
So my question would be how did you generate the HDRI map? Did you sample off a different frame shot from a pulled out view or did you simply fake the map?

So I set up an actual mirrored sphere on a tripod outside. Then I took pictures of it at several different exposures. I then turned it into an HDR spherical map using a program called HDRshop. That was then taken into Cinema 4D and placed on two separate spheres, one to serve as lighting, and the other to be available for reflections. Then all I did was slap some spheres into the shot with different materials. The background image is a still taken from a video I shot of the same location I did the HDR photos at. The background isn't HDR. I should have explained further. Didn't know anyone would be savvy to HDR.

I think it is just us who care... We'll have to hang out and have a geek render party

That would be totally sweet. Maybe someday I'll be able to setup a render farm, and then we can render ridiculously insanely huge shots. We could turn it into a drinking game.
