Figured since I'm playing through it for the 1st time, that I could write my impressions as I go through. I've just gotten to the iced over world after you ditch Cybill, and leave the cop car.
Honestly, I'm finding it hard to keep playing, cause the ice world is so incredibly annoying. Not only is it so dark that I can't really see anything, but the character himself seems to get in the way of any proper viewing. Also, when I finally get a flare, it makes it even harder to see where I'm going. So, so far it has ended up in mad dashes that when I finally get a second to look at my phone, have taken me in the wrong direction. Also, shaking the "monsters" off seems pretty worthless to me.
It's actually driving me crazy, and makes me wanna quit. The monsters are not scary to me, and just an incredible annoyance. Perhaps this will change at some point.
Was it incredibly hard for you guys to see where you were going, or do I need to turn up the brightness?
So far I'm not liking the experience at all. The exploring is kind of cool, but knowing that I will not encounter anything kind of kills any sense of foreboding or suspense, which I think is the most fundamental aspect of any Silent Hill game.
Once again, perhaps this will change with time. Currently though, it's making me wanna try out Halo Reach instead. I'll keep playing for a bit...

So far I'm not liking the experience at all. The exploring is kind of cool, but knowing that I will not encounter anything kind of kills any sense of foreboding or suspense, which I think is the most fundamental aspect of any Silent Hill game. I think you're viewing it from the wrong angle. SM isn't about fear of impending doom - it's like SH2 on Beginner mode - there's no real danger for your health, but... Your sanity, now, there's something to watch out for. SM is a different take on the SH formula and you shoould NOT expect known scares or archetypes - that was never the plan. (And foreboding and suspense and fear from monsters a key aspect of SH? What!? Don't be silly! ) My advice - play it through the first time on your instincts and how you usually play - so that the game profiles you as it should. On the second playthrough (yes, you WILL play it at least twice, trust me) go visit all of the different paths you have missed (and I guarantee there are many little tidbits you miss very easily). Keep in mind - what you see is determined by you and you alone, there's going to be a point in the game where you'll be...well...if nothing else, at least stunned. As for the ice world, I had no real issues. I loved that kind of gameplay ever since Clocktower, so, I found it fun. It's just a matter of how much you can immerse yourself I guess. And if you can't see where you're going and it's not that easy - well - that's the point? (And you haven't even got to the ice world where...well...you'll know what I mean soon enough.) Trust me, it pays off.

Yea, after playing some more, and turning up the brightness!, I'm enjoying it much more. Perhaps I was a little harsh before. I really enjoy the non-iced over parts of the game. I'm trying to enjoy the iced over parts, but it hasn't happened yet. Perhaps with the brightness up a bit, it will be a little easier. It was just frustrating me cause it was so dark that it made it near impossible to make it through. I do like that so much attention is put into the story. Doesn't seem too cliche, and the acting seems reasonable. I'll keep at it, and post again soon!

When I first touched the game it was on the Wii, and it was just too obnoxious for me to continue. I stopped at the school. Now that I have it on my PSP, it's more bearable for me.
My first impressions were unhappy with how everything was so far from the canon, and annoyed with the monsters. Overall and after playing it many times, I actually really, really like it. I like SH0 and SHSM, but I still hate Homecoming.

eeek. I feel so dishonorable admitting that I have yet to go back to Shattered Memories. Gotta get some days off and hit this again...
