trying to get back into painting and drawing, esp. with oils, and working on mostly doing portraits for now.. Lisa Garland. Oil paint. she still looks too happy, which is odd since she's bleeding all over. lol. trying to make a bunch of stuff to put in the background of my site, and this is the first attempt at this. still needs work. i want to paint alessa's hospital room behind her, and maybe put a syringe in her hand. right now the bg is just black so i cropped it closely tho. Misty day recreation, work in progress. Hugin from Blodarv. Hugin again. acrylic on canvas. Daniel Vrangsinn, best known for playing bass for Carpathian Forest. Oil on illustration board. My cousins' dogs, oil on canvas. I gave this to my cousin for his birthday last month. Scan was before it was done, so there's smears and stuff all over the white parts. My dog. Acrylic on canvas. My uncle Larry. Not happy with this one yet. his chin doesn't look right, and all of it needs work. My great grandmother (mother's mother's mother), circa 1920, unfinished, oil on canvas. Another great grandmother (mother's father's mother), circa 1962. giving this one away though. very unfinished. lifted up some of the paint from the glasses because i can't get it right. argh. this is sitting right next to me driving me nuts right now. trying to get it more or less finished today. my mom wants it.

This is good stuff, but I am a little shocked that a resource hacker like yourself isn't dabbling in the digital. It is a such a forgiving medium...
Already you can do a better likeness than I can

thanks.
i hate hate hate digital, probably because i had to use photoshop for work for several years. it's like doing stuff on a computer makes an automatic association with work in my mind, and therefore it cannot possibly be fun. ^_^ i mean, i like it when other people do stuff, but not me.
nothing like getting yourself all filthy and covered in paint and smelling like turpentine, anyhoo. ^_^

Certainly it is a more visceral experience but on a machine you never run out of pixels. And you can always mix the exact same color immediately. Show me where ctrl-Z is on your brush, or the layers on your canvas. You can only flip that badboy on one axis!
Sure, there were a buncha cool things I could do traditionally that I can barely emulate today but when I think of all the myriad ways going digital has made my life easier and my art better it makes me weep to think of you and melty doing things the hard way
I mean, if you really want to be old school then more power to yus...

my paintings are lifeless enough as it is, without making them even more lifeless on a computer. (not to say you or others are that way of course, but rather, that *i* would be even worse on a computer).
i know what you mean, but as i said, i had only been using computers for a long time, and after ten years, i am getting out the old paints. the fact that it's a challenge to mix the same color twice is a positive thing to me. my canvas does have layers, yo! because i am stingy with paint and i paint in a million thin layers, and if i want to erase, i lift stuff off with a clean brush and paint thinner, oil paint is very forgiving.
lulz at me and melty doing things "the hard way!" ^_^ it si the fun way. i like the smell of paint. and i got a good deal on canvases, and i'm gonna go buy a bunch more because i've been being worked to death all week and should have money next week.
meanwhile, i'm still trying to remember how to paint. working on a recreation of the midwich 'painting of a door' from SH1 now.i always wanted either that or the 4f nowhere paintings on my wall in real life. actually, i think i just want to live in nowhere in real life.

While you might find your paintings lifeless, they're actually far superior to anything that I was able to paint the hard way, so you're already one up on me. If you really want to be all you can be as an artist, then I invite you to give digital art another try. You can't realize your full potential under the constraints of traditional media. But if you actually enjoy the visceral process of working with oils, then obviously the computer will leave you unsatisfied
Honestly, I still miss the tactile aspect of painting and if you've surfed my site then you can see that I've made attempts to bring a painterly feel to my work but ultimately I must admit that my painting skills were mediocre at best and they were holding me back. Only after my digital migration was I able to begin to realize my full potential...
Please don't think that I'm trying to push you around, but instead consider that I was once in your position and finally saw the light. The transition is both natural and obvious; think of it as an evolutionary leap. Yes, it takes a while to acclimatize but you are strong enough to withstand the culture shock and you have the raw talent of a resource hacker to get you past the hard bits
Unless you really just want to paint traditionally, which is completely valid and there is nothing wrong with that. But if you are serious about being all you can be as an artist, then you should seriously consider making the computer a part of your life. Even if it only means you previsioning before you paint
Better living through advanced technology is my mantra, and I am excited when I think about how you can apply your skills in a more forgiving format. Should you choose to remain in a traditional format, then I expect you will continue to contribute good art but if you give the digital approach another try then you will surely recognize the worth of migration

Yeah, you're right of course. Since I'm so damned old, we only did basic photoshop stuffs in my art classes, and didn't really focus on digital at all because no one was using it. lol. even my animation classes focused on doing stuff on paper. I've been wanting to try some other programs, like the corel painter one sounds interesting to me. in photoshop i just tend to use the airbrush and then everything looks the same, and crappy. Still, I like to have an actual copy of stuff, a physical thing like a painting. i know you can make prints, but it's not the same for me. Some more unfinished crap: my aunt's dog. quick and small, tried to get it done on the dog's birthday my uncle larry again, but he ended up looking like a weird hybrid of larry and my dad My cousin's dog Misty Day, almost finished but the spear still sucks. really need to finish the grandmother one. somebody commissioned me to do another dog so i have been working on even more dogs instead,. argh.

Just in case you want to, if they seem interesting... Honestly, I've tried a few out that I had no interest in using, just for laughs
I'm not saying to hop in the deep end- but if you wanna stick your toe in the water...

Yeah, I just got a bunch more canvases so I doubt I'll be doing anything digital for a while. Sold 2 paintings this week though.
My problem is that I have to sit on the computer all day and work, and that makes me hate the idea of doing anything else on the computer, ever. And laziness. Etc.

Congrats on selling your work! I can certainly sympathize with your computing woes... I remember back when I was pulling the sixteen hour shifts and not even wanting to look at my machine when I finally got home My problem is that I have to sit on the computer all day and work, and that makes me hate the idea of doing anything else on the computer, ever. And laziness. Etc.

thanks.
Yeah, I've been on the computer all day today doing work, and it's so demotivating. Argh.
Additionally someday i need to get a tablet. using the mouse is hard for me, i prefer having a pencil or paintbrush in hand.

Don't let people lie to you- a tablet is a prerequisite for digital art. But you can still use your machine to previz or do color corrections... that sorta thing
Ultimately it doesn't matter how you do art, so long as you are doing art...

No one is lying to me, I'm just too lazy and cheap to get one. Actually when I have had money, I always forget, and now I have a bunch of medical bills to deal with, so I don't feel right about spending the money on one. Will do so when I think of it, because it's impossible to do anything that doesn't suck without one. Especially if you're me. ^_^
But I'm at least trying to get back to drawing something every day. Not necessarily something good, but something. ^_^
