I'm looking into trying out the Metal Gear Solid series and was wondering if it would be absolutely essential I play them in order. For instance, I played Silent Hill in the following order - SH3, SH2, SH4, SH:O, SH:H, SH:D, SH1.
I don't feel like I missed out on the greatness of SH just because I played out of order, but I was wondering if Metal Gear would work out the same way.

Hmmm, thats a tough answer.
They all reference each other. Like there are tons of MGS2 references in MGS3 and MGS3 takes place before MGS2
Timewise its MGS3, Peace Walker, MGS1, MGS2, MGS4
It's up to you really. There are plus sides to playing the games in the order in which they came out (and be surprised by the twists in MGS3) or play them in the way in which they occur in the games' universe (and not be surprised by the twists)

Like Vaco said, its a difficult recomendation. Especially considered that the gameplay is slowly refined as the series progressed, it can be annoying going between games and not having those features in them. In a case like that, i'd say you'd be better off going in release order. (Feature's that came in as the series go are things like aiming and moving in first person, not needing to equip key cards to open doors, and the crazily efficient Crouching and walking at the same time.) But then again, playing them in Chronological order might make some things more clear from the get go

I'd say definetly play the first game first. After that it's kinda up to you.
