Eh, the point as far as I can see was nostalgia for the old forum. No one really talks about SH anymore and the jokes got stale. I spend most of my time on Unikgamer now.

The board is dead because the series is. Or may as well be:

^ Premise sounds neat but a multiplayer Silent Hill is a bad idea, even as a complete spinoff thing.

I admit I still love Silent Hill, but it's hard to engage in a community for so long with so little new material to talk about. Aside from Revelations coming out in October we haven't had anything new since Downpour. Shattered Memories was a nice reimagining, but Silent Hill just isn't one of those series that can just be rebooted. Incredible care would have to be taken and at the end of the day we all know what happens anyway. They'd basically need an entirely different direction with a genre they have no interest is keeping alive. It's all about action games now, apparently. XP Here's to hoping Silent Hill makes a comeback, but I doubt this forum will get going again before that happens. It's never been the same since the old forum died.

The board is dead because the series is. Or may as well be: Good Form, Well said. XP Here's to hoping Silent Hill makes a comeback, but I doubt this forum will get going again before that happens. It's never been the same since the old forum died. What I'm wondering now is What would it take to make the Games good again. You made an interesting point by saying an Entirely different direction. I never considered Silent Hill a series with a true sense of Continuity - a clearly defined world, a fictional universe with constants, to be sure, but no arc - and in that sense, 'restarting' is kind of a pointless notion. You could Redo Silent Hill one (Which has already been done twice), but what more could you introduce? Following that, you could do Silent Hill 3 in the same vein, but 2? Even in their supreme arrogance, they know not to touch that baby. They know what we, in our fussiness and fanatical devotion, would do to them for harming a hair on that Video Game's head. Remember how pissed off we got about the New Voicing and then the Fog layering in the HD Collection? Imagine if they made Significant changes. Since Silent Hill 3, every single game has had an almost totally separate feel as the ones before. Four was intentional - Team Silent wanted to explore more options, step away from the mold and be more creative. They disappointed a lot of people with it (I'm sure some of you remember my opinion on that game, I certainly voiced it enough), but it was a legitimate creative desire. Origins was an intentional Mimicking of the previous ones, but the limited medium made it's feel quite different. Homecoming was a modern game, what executives THING horror games are like. SM was a complete change, I don't even have to explain that. Downpour was more of a... well, the Mechanics were most like Homecoming, but it also stepped off in a direction of it's own. So what new direction, new Genre can they go in? How can they break a mold when there IS no mold anymore? There are no trends in the series, nothing that stays the same throughout (Except, maybe, those cool menu and save screen sounds.) Of course there are the 'Story' trends that the series has stuck to - wind up in town, dark past, 'Oh man, I killed someone once! I forgot that maybe!', Weird characters showing up and being vague, all of that. But here I'm talking about Gameplay - what new direction could they go in? Personal, I'd be interested in fusing Silent Hill with the gameplay from the Quantic Dream games, Heavy Rain and Farenheit/Indigo Prophecy. SM is probably moderately close to that, but still a far ways away. I would play the hell out of that game, I'd never put it down. What other Genres could they go in? What directions could they consider? (By the Way, sorry I keep going off on tangents and making long posts only loosely connected to the actual Topic. But maybe that's how the Forum can be Resurrected, yeh? By Just talking about what little there is to talk about, no matter how unnecessary.)

I was thinking today, i'd like to see a Silent Hill game done by Telltale games. They've managed to develop several different franchises that normally have different feels, and they're work on Jurassic Park (not a great game) and The walking Dead (a really good game) have managed to bring they're style a bit more inline with Quantic Dreams stuff. Combine that a bit with maybe some of Shattered Memories Chase mechanic, or a Bell Tower/Hunting Ground hide and seek/chase game play in the building, could have a nice game. As for the forum, we are silent hill fans, we've got a community that generally has similar interests. Doesn't just have to be silent hill that we talk about. We can talk about everything and anything until there's more development on the franchise.

I think many people have either stopped playing the new games, or don't have the consoles to play them on. Even in this day and age, some people still can't affors to buy a PS3/360 or perhaps don't want one.
And as others have said, this is now a broken base. Many people have drifted away from the franchise since Team Silent disbanded, and the atrocious abomination that was the HD collection seems to have alienated them further.
I am still a huge fan of the series, but since the forum seems to be dwindling, I see no point in continuing dying threads. I've tried to ignite new life in the forum by starting new threads in the Downpour section, but nobody seems to really care enough about the game to bother replying, or they just haven't played it yet.
But like Sindaiin said, it's all about action. Even the most ambitious Silent Hill game, Shattered Memories, received complaints because there wasn't enough action. It's like a game of noughts and crosses. You can't win.
I was sad at first, but I eventually accepted the fact that the series is never going to regain the popularity it once had. People are just too fickle these days.

Book of Memories is actually decent... Not great, but it's pretty fun.
We need a plan to bring this place back to life though, I was actually just thinking that while browsing Reddit, and decided to come here as a result to say so. Came in and found this thread having already been created.

The problem, as far as I see it, is that Call of Duty has screwed everything up. Everyone wants to make the money that game is making, everything is being shifted to action gameplay to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Unless your something like Minecraft that's cheap to produce and unique, then a niche market doesn't seem to be cutting it these days. And unfortunately proper horror games are a niche market (so we can blame socitey for mostly consisting of a bunch of wussies)
So really, it's not a surprise the silent hill series has suffered as late, which is turn has effect forum activity.
Hopefully the current state of gaming might change, the backlash that came from 'Aliens: Colonial Marines' (which they pretty much turned into Call of Duty in Space) might prove to developers that turning some horror franchises into action games might actually kill the game.
And now Dead Space has been killed off, because Dead (action) space 3 wasn't received so well.
At some point, the developers are going to start asking why making 'Call of Duty' clones arn't working and stop thinking that it's the answer to everything.

The Backlash against Aliens: Colonial Marines had almost nothing to do with it being like Call of Duty actually, it was a matter of Gearbox baiting and switching unfinished demo footage and gameplay with a 6 year old build released to the public.
Not just an ancient gameplay build, but a flawed, buggy and unfinished one to boot. Actually EXACTLY like Duke Nuke'em Forever. Gearbox and Randy Pitchford in general are a bunch of lying arseholes to put it bluntly. Sega shed light on exactly what happened with the game, and it wasn't pretty. But still Gearbox did nothing buy turn away anything other than positive comments about the game. A total fucking trainwreck of a develpopment cylce, and the lack of Gearbox giving a fuck about anything other than making a dime killed Aliens.
