One thing that me and my sister keep arguing about is Silent hill 2 , about who was a real person and who was just a manifestation of Jame's mind. I have my theories, and she has hers, I stick with my theories, but she also makes some good points. The few characters besides James; Maria, Angela, Eddie, Laura, some of them are easy to tell whether they're real or not, however others are hard to tell. So I want to know who was real and who was not because it's really starting to drive me crazy. Here are my theories: the people who are real: Angela, Eddie. the people who aren't real: Maria, Laura. So, what is the real answer?

I'm fairly certain that Laura is a real person.
A, Eddie sees Laura too. He reacts to her, and based on a shot from the opening scene movie, she might have even traveled to silent hill with Eddie. Maria, however, is never shown interacting with anyone else. It seems like she doesn't go into the bowling alley just to avoid having to be in the same room as someone who doesn't 'need' her.
B, Laura has a history with Mary, and another Letter than Mary didn't send. While this can't objectively prove that Laura did know Mary, the fact that Maria in the Born from a Wish Scenario - being based off of Mary and having some of her memories - remarks about Laura being fond of Teddy Bears (I think) seems to prove it. Also, that explains why Maria seeks to protect Laura.
C, Finally, James has no reason to create Laura. Maria was made by him because of his desire for the perfect woman. If he made Laura too, where did she come from? The desire to have a child? James never seemed to want one, and he certainly didn't like her. That was Mary's desire, not his.
So basically, It's safe to assume Laura is real, and that Maria is the only character that existed outside of Silent Hill.

Well Maria is clearly the only one that isn't real because she is the only one that didn't give James an explaination as to why she is even there. Everyone else explains that something brought them there or are looking for someone. Maria is just.......there. All Maria explains is that she is alone and everyone else is gone. Pretty much it. And for some reason James never asks if she is a local, what she was doing in the park or if she knew how the town got to how it was. He just allows her to come along after asking next to nothing about her.
I think if James was a smarter man, he would of realized something was up with her much eariler. It's like James is so spellbound about her likeness to Mary that he just accepts her existance, no questions asked....
.....Even when she calls him James at the hospital, dispite the fact that James never told her his name.

I don't think James was stupid, he was caught up in a world of his creation. He was fully immersed, and accepted the otherworld as the true reality.
When I dream, I don't question what is happening to me. No matter how absurd things get, I do not doubt the existance of the characters that I have dreamt up. That is until I begin to enquire on what is happening - then the dreamworld gradually slips away.
When James is in Silent Hill, he does not question on why these events are happening. He doesn't doubt Maria's existance or face Pyramid Head until he comes to terms with what he did to Mary. Then the otherworld slips away.
Or, James picks the Maria ending, and he never "wakes up."

Whilst I agree that Maria is the only fake person amongst the cast, I have to wonder whether or not Ernest was real. Afterall, nobody outside of Maria speaks to him, and it seems his only purpose is to point her towards James. But in the mansion there's a birthday card left for his daughter, you have to complete missions for him, and there isn't really any evidence to suggest he doesn't exist.

I'm pretty sure Maria was the only one who wasn't real. The others were just people who were called to the town for whatever reason.

So, what about Mary? Was the real Mary lying at the bottom of a lake somehwere, or was the Mary we fight ressurected by the town?
I think it's the latter personally, but what if she was the real Mary, just a puppet of Silent Hill? We've seen it happen to Lisa before now.
