Let's get this out of the way: I think that in the early writing stages, someone probably did say "let's try to work Pyramid Head into this somewhere." But his presence in the game is justifiable. He wasn't really necessary but it makes sense for him to be there. Why? Blades. Throughout the game there is a recurring theme of knives, blades and sharp pointy implements. I think it all stems from the knife Alex carries around (the one that unlocks all those doors). It's probably what was used to sacrifice the children. This constant "blades" theme explains a lot of things you see in the game, Pyramid Head among them (what with his Great Knife). Also, a lot of fans get hung up on what he represented in SH2. In order to justify his being in the game, you have to disregard that and just remember what he is according to the history of the town itself: an Executioner. Execution and sacrifice are two slightly different things, but maybe not so much in Alex's mind when he found out they were about to kill his little brother. As for why he's wearing his "Movie Makover" outfit, one could argue that it is due partly to the technical difference between execution and sacrifice, but mostly to the fact that the story doesn't revolve mainly around Silent Hill, but its sister town Shepherd's Glen. Different town, different outfit. Stands to reason. Yeah, that one's a bit more of a stretch, but it works.
Overall, Homecoming is hardly such a bad game. Closely examined, it's considerably more intelligent than a lot of people give it credit for.

Bravo Vincent, I like your explanation.
But if I could throw in my two cents...
As in my personal answer to why PH looks different than before...Well the way I see it is that ALL of the monsters, PH included in SH look different based on who's looking at them. As in While I may see PH as his SH2 model in an abandoned hotel, YOU might see him as his movie model in the same hotel, across the hallway from me.
That's just how I feel.
I truly loved Sh:Homecoming, truly. I think it's a lot deeper than most give it credit for. I've finished it twice now, and am considering a third go. See, I wouldn't lie about this just because I love SH, because if a game is junk to me, I'll tell you it is, and why i believe so. (Dead Space was a grand example of this. I thought it was going to be AMAZING...I was sorely disappointed.) I love Homecoming, not quite as much as 2 or 3, but still more than 4, 1 and Origins.

According to the developers; Pyramid Head is there because of the collective subconscious of the people.

MTVMultiplayer did an interview with Jason Allen, and there's one part where Jason says
Pyramid Head/Bogeyman explained
This myth can be read when you find the drawings that Josh leaves behind. Each drawing contains a part of the myth.

Actually come to think about it, I do recall reading something like that...and I never even really made the connection. That's actually a pretty interesting thing to think about. And an angle most people don't even consider when questioning PH's reason in the game.

I'll have to find the theory I posted, but when I speculated about his appearance, it was close to the explanation that Jason gave.

Possible to get a link for that interview?
It's all good reasoning. I just don't understand why he's in the hotel. It makes sense why he's in the hospital and why he kills Alex's father. I have no problems with this.
But pyramid head's dramatic super cool intense sweet pose in the hotel does NOT seem to have any relevance as far as I'm concerned. I think it may have something to do with Bartlett's affair with that woman but that's a pretty big stretch of a guess.

Blast. And I really liked my theory. As for the "super cool intense sweet pose", I'm probably at least right about someone saying at the beginning, "let's try to get Pyramid Head into this."

One of the theories I had about Pyramid Head's scene in the hotel, was this. (Taken from one of my theories.) Not bad. Really, there are "official" explanations for pretty much everything in the Silent Hill mythos, but I rather like the idea of standing by one's own theory. The way things are interpreted can be unique to one player and can show what they mean to the individual.

I wouldn't go that far. For example it's been officially stated that Alessa is the mother of God. So that means it'd be very wrongly weird of me to make a theory saying that Alessa is actually the father of God.

Right, well, I mean, it's also officially stated that Sonic the Hedgehog is a hedgehog. I meant the less obvious, somewhat more open-ended bits.

Personally, I don't think they had a good reason for him to be in there; they just wanted him there to drag in some cash. I don't think they strained themselves trying to think of a good reason for it.

Ironic how he actually fits in with the game.
And before anyone starts. No; Pyramid Head is not exclusive to James; or rather the concept of Pyramid Head is not exclusive to James.
