I thought the movie started well, and kind of lost it in the middle.
The opening wasn't perfect though, in fact I thought the first 10 minutes were really bad, then picked up to about the middle of the end, and then it just dropped. Compared to the first game the movie is nothing, compared to good movies like Jacob's Ladder, Silent Hill is nothing, compared to other adaptations, it was pretty good.
And it pains me to say it, I really like the directors other work. Crying Freeman was a really good movie, overall, but with this, Christophe Gans must have spent too long down the Rabbit Hole.

Just to say (sorry for double posting, this was not intended) I do LIKE the movie, I just don't think it's as good as it could have been.

I still think they should have removed the cult and kept Harry. In fact I would have preferred the entire film to have been just like the game with Cybil not being burned alive, Lisa having a bigger part, Kaufman being included and Dahlia being a total bitch.
As far as adaptations go Silent Hill is definately the best I've seen next to Tomb Raider but the plot mixed elements of the game with a completely different and unrelated story. I still don't get how hard it is to follow the storyline of a game when everything is already laid out for them.

I though the movie was fantastic. But a really, really, really frustrating thing about Silent Hill is the cult. Too much cult! They need to be more subtle! I understand the cult being an important part of the story but every new game and the movie since 2 has shoved them down our throats. Especially the movie and Homecoming. If they had done what you just said, the movie would have honestly been a lot scarier, mysterious and a hell of a lot better.

Some of the lines are cliche and cheesy. The worst being Cheryl -Sharon (God... I just wrote Cheryl.... ) when she was at the waterfall screaming Silent Hill... seriously? Come on man.... Ugh! I agree with that. Jodelle is usually a better actress than that. That one and "Mother is God in the eyes of a child," or whatever the exact line was. A variation was used in The Crow to much better effect so many years ago, and I felt like they were stealing the line from that movie.

I went into this in a lengthy rant on the old forums back when the movie first came out, so I'll just sum up my feelings with the three points that still irk me to this day:
-Rose was a weakling that never fought anything, whose response to every event was to scream, cry, and make frantic phone calls back to her husband for help. Her entire contribution to the body count was one cultist sucker-knifed in the chest. No, I did not want her to be some uber-fighter like Alice from the RE movies. I just wish they'd written her with a spine. I mean think about it: If they'd left the main character Harry, would he have acted like that?
-I agree with divinityofdeath, PH and the sexy nurses had no right to be in this movie. The writer obviously didn't stop to consider the symbolism inherent in these creatures, and that they were from someone else's subconscious all together. They basically said, "Well, we want the fans to see it, right? And those fans love that Pyramid Head and those sexy nurses, right? Yeah, that'll make them happy."
-The cult was stupid. I agree that they should have been a lot more mysterious, if present at all, and in far fewer numbers. One aspect I've always liked about the games is that they are solitary journeys of self-discovery and inner turmoil. I think the largest cast of characters I've seen in any Silent Hill game was in 2, with a whopping six (counting Mary and Maria as two different people). Taking an empty ghost town and filling it with cultists is self-defeating and pointless, especially when all they do is shout "burn the witch" and offer nothing to further the plot.
I have many, many more reasons why I hate the movie, but I think these are my top three. This may be bad of me, but I'm glad Roger Avary isn't writing the next one. It actually gives me some hope, but not much.

Roger Avery isn't helping with Silent Hill 2? Nice.
Take out the cult, make it more ambiguous (like the ending), beat some monsters down with a pipe, maybe only once or something so it doesn't turn into the whole Resident Evil/Mia Jovovich/Perfect Weapon shit. Try and recreate tone/mood/atmosphere of Silent Hill. Eat a taco, go to bed.

Is there even still going to BE a second movie? I'm not inclined to hold my breath, as I'm still seeing the same old information that's been around for years. As of September of last year, Avery was still a script-writer and I haven't seen anything since to contradict that.

That's the only recent info I've seen. Funny that it didn't come up when I did a google search. The most recent I could get on that was back in mid 2009.

Hmm, I don't know, but I read something the other day that said he was working on it despite his incarceration... Might not of been true.

My friend Megan (who has watched me play SH 1-4 and Origins) saw the movie and actually seemed to like it a lot more than I did. She really appreciated it visually. It may have partly been because she saw it on a laptop and therefore expected less of the film in general. At any rate, her best friend was there and they made fun of parts of it together (she was shocked the screaming baby-face bug part wasn't for humor, I had to explain that horror movies aren't usually trying to be funny). Personally I don't see the point of making fun of a movie. She said it helped her to appreciate it more, but it would make me think less of a movie. If you can't like a movie enough to take it seriously when it wants to be taken seriously, then I don't see the point in watching it. Either it deserves respect or it doesn't and it's not worth your time. Horror movies aren't supposed to be comedies unless they're legitametly trying to be funny, which I know some do try for.

Oh man, I forgot about the screaming bug part...
I wouldn't have minded that without the screaming face. Seems a little unnecessary.

The face creeped me out. Seeing human-like faces on animals always gets to me.

Interesting...so for you it worked! It's been a while since I watched it through. Better give it another watch soon. I do remember loving the cinematography and production design.
