Have you tried installing the game by using Steam instead of the discs? Try just reinstalling Steam, and instead of using the dvds, try just redownloading the game. Also try running the game .exe file directly from the "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\FEAR2" (or whatever it's called) folder. Are you getting any error messages or even just the general Windows error sound when you try opening it? I didn´t even know that was possible. I sent customer support an e-mail but I´m still waiting for a repply. I didn´t get any error message when I try to open Steam, just a brief glimpse of the hourglass icon indicating that it´s processing and then... nothing. I tried deleting steam again from my control pannel but this time around it´s proving even more dificult than the first time (I can´t delete the steam folder from the C:/programs directory like I did before, I get an error message that some program is still using something-something.dll ).

Yeah. You pretty much really just paid for the CD-Key anyway, since Steam downloads the newest version of the files that are already on the discs. The discs just can't auto-update in the same way that the latest version stored on Steam does. What's the .dll file called? Also, the program called " Unlocker" helps with things such as when a program continuously reads a file like that. You can use it if you want. I find it pretty useful, but it's ultimately up to you.

Sorry I completely forgot to answer your question but I got so fed up with this whole imbroglio that I decided to just give up.
IIRC, it´s pretty much every .dll file in there (there´s like 6+, I think...).
There´s been a new development that restored my hopes.
Today, I booted up my computer with my internet cable detacched. I can never get Steam to acxtivate no matter how many times i click on it, but the fact that there was no internet connection apparently prompted Steam to self-activate just so it could inform me that the connection was severed. I took the chance to log in to my account and was able to get steam working again. I repeated this again and it seems like I found a M.O..
Every time I wanna play Fear 2, all I have to do is reboot my computer, making sure to dettach the internet cable
What a pain...
