I think I also need to put up a sample of Kalmah, because they also deserve your attention.
Kalmah's guitar work STILL gives me gooseflesh to hear it.

The Skeletonwitch song was sexy. Very sexy. Reminded me of Ministry but the actual metal version of a band like that.
Kalmah..... less than 20 seconds and I hear what you mean. Holy shit hah. Now this is what I've been looking for more of in terms of metal. These bands don't fuck around.
I think I like the Kalmah song more. Both these bands are next on my list.
I also see that you say In Flames newer stuff is garbage. Why do you think that? Last I heard was Come Clarity and before that Soundtrack to Your Escape. I actually really like both of those CDs. I've heard some of their earlier work as well and it's also really good. Honestly, I have no idea why I don't have more of their stuff. It's probably cause my ex loved them so much hah.

In Flames changed their sound almost completely from their fifth studio album, Reroute to Remain and on. They used to be true Swedish Melodic death metal, of the Gothenburg sound. That all came to an abrupt halt after Clayman, their fourth release. They keep bringing in more and more influences from nu-metal (Ironically a genre they partial helped to form.), and to me they just got progressively worse and worse.
To the point that I almost threw their newest album, A Sense of Purpose out my fiance's car window upon our first listening to it after having just bought it. If I hadn't just spent 10 bucks on it, I would have launched it out onto the highway. It was fucking horrible, and there was literally absolutely no trace of the old band they once used to be on it. Come Clarity I hated, but it was tolerable. It sounded too much like a Swede version of Slipknot. Soundtrack To Your Escape again was better than the last two, I actually like a few tracks from it.
Reroute to Remain also has some decent tracks. As I said, every album has gotten progressively worse, they're hardly even metal anymore. They're certainly not melodic death metal now. And that's really disappointing, considering they are one of the forefathers of the genre.
The only true Swedish Melo. death out there, that still holds onto the Gothenburg sound is Dark Tranquillity. They've never really changed all that much. I'm still a huge fan of them. I've seen them live twice, and met with and talked extensively with their singer, whom speaks surprisingly good English. At the Gates held onto this sound until their last breath as well, but unfortunately, they've broken up, and while they've had a reunion tour, they've flat out stated they will not make another album.
Kalmah is melodic death, but of the Finnish variety. Something akin to Norther and Children of Bodom. CoB on the other hand pulled an In Flames and have strayed far, far away from true melodic death metal. Not pleased with them either, and I never liked their vocalist, Alexi to begin with. Norther sounds a good deal like oldschool CoB, and I guess that's alright.
BUT Kalmah simply kickass. They've stayed consistently with their genre, not bowing to a sound that will make them more record sales to the mainstream crowd, and sticking with what they originated as. asskicking, guitar shredding melodic death metal.
Skeletonwitch is special to me, because their first studio album released in 2007, and they're from Ohio. That's REALLY close to my neck of the woods. Making them almost a local band. For a long, long time I'd pretty much given up on thinking any decent, real metal could be produced from this side of the US, in this modern age. Skeletonwitch proved me wrong. To top it off, the band themselves are lighthearted, down to earth guys with a sense of humor. They're quickly rising in the metal scene, but they're still kinda underrated. I think they deserve a lot more.
Their attention to technicality in their music, no bullshit, no compromise attitude with their music, and their strong BNWOHM (British New Wave of Heavy Metal) influenced guitar work is fantastic, and spot on. They deserve praise, and I plug them whenever I can.

I can understand that. I almost did that with Manson's album Eat Me Drink Me. Damn near threw it out of the car it was so awful. I can understand your discontent when an artist betrays themselves.
I got into In Flames with Soundtrack to Your Escape so I can't say I relate really. I'll probably just get the In Flames discography since for the most part I think I'll enjoy it all.
I recently listened to some Xasthur and I have to say it's amazing. It makes me think of a metal version of My Bloody Valentine honestly. It has a lot of atmosphere and ambient distortion. Definitely my kinda thing. I look forward to getting more into this band.
I'll get to Skeletonwitch and Kalmah soon. I've been getting into a few other bands that have been recommended for me. Music is wonderful but very time consuming and impossible to get into all the good stuff ~ ~

You haven't even mentioned Cirith Ungol yet...

So where would you place Cirith Ungol in your heirachy of metal? Heavy Metal. After hearing them they're pretty easy to identify in sound. Their vocals resemble something akin to AC/DC actually. And Tabris, I think strictly based on your interest, I'll post my write up of Black Metal. I think you'll find a lot of the education you're looking for within. I'll even include an example or two, including Burzum for you. I did here Alx. They're not really black metal, not what I was after here. But to be fair, neither are Skeletonwitch and Kalmah. Skeletonwitch is blackened thrash, and Kalmah is melodic death. Either way, Tabris asked about my tastes, and those two are probably my favorite bands. I can't say I'm real keen on them though. They're not horrible, but not my thing.

So I seen Skeletonwitch last night at the University near my school. They played with The Black Dahlia Murder and Children of Bodom.
All 3 bands put on an amazing show but Skeletonwitch was fucking SICK. Performance wise they blew the other two bands out of the water. Their intensity was completely insane. Bodom didn't manage to get half the mosh pit that Skeletonwitch had going.
I'd see those guys again in a heartbeat.
The Black Dahlia Murder was pretty awesome though. Children of Bodom put on a crazy cool show but they didn't have the energy Skeletonwitch had. Not even close.

BDM is lame as shit to me personally. I like some, select older CoB, but not a whole lot. But yes Skeletonwitch is amazing live. They deserve to be with better bands...
