Well my PS3 just broke after only a year of use. At first it froze after 20 minutes of gameplay, so I went into safe mode and restored my system like Sony told me to. Then it stopped reading discs altogether. It still shows that little symbol in the corner of the screen recognizing that a disc was inserted, but the game never comes up on the menu.
This is my second PS3 to break, so I kind of think Sony sucks. Does anyone have any ideas on how I may be able to fix this myself? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you could always open it up and check the insides. It's really easy too! Just find a youtube tutorial and it goes like LEGOs. What model is it? My 60GB one is screaming when I play it, and opening it up did nothing, but at least it was interesting to look at.
Maybe it's pre-YLOD? A general clean-up could be necessary...
Or maybe some contact or something broke, who can say...

I think its a 40gb, but maybe a 20gb(can't really remember). I'll try cleaning it out, but that PS3 has a pretty funky screw holding the lid on, I'll probably have to by some weird screwdriver for it before I can get in there.

Thanks for all the help, but sadly my PS3 is beyond repair. After trying what you guys said and a few other youtube remedies, it still doesn't work. I'll just have to start saving for a new one...

GAH!!!! I'm now in the same boat as you. My PS3 stalled whilst playing Borderlands and now won't read discs. An internet research of the error code says the Blu-Ray laser died. and right before ACII comes out

I know, I know. Mine died just days before my pre-ordered Tekken 6 came in. Now I have a brand new Tekken 6 game in my house and haven't even gotten to play it.

For future reference, the PS3 fan test Vaco posted can actually do a lot more harm than it can help. I'd recommend against it.

My condolences for you, guys.
Ugh... I had enough problems with my PS2. I was planning in getting a PS3, but this thread makes me afraid. If the blu-ray dies, for example, there's fixing, right? Changing the laser, whatever.
I can't afford to buy more than one PS3. >_<

I've heard pretty much the same thing about Xbox 360s, if not more horror stories. If you're gonna buy either of them, buy a new one so you at least get the warranty.

360s have FAR more failure rate history than the PS3. Trust me on this.
Some people have bad luck one way or another, but I love my PS3, which is a newer (No backwards compatability) 80gb. It single-handedly swayed my opinion on the console war. My first 360 broke down after having been treated like royalty, and it scared me, even though I got a free replacement through warranty.
I saved up enough to get a PS3, and I'd already preordered and bought MGS4, so I already had a game to play. We've been great friends since. I've never looked back.

I think I'll get it... If something happens after the warranty expires, well, there's always some way.
And indeed I've heard more stories about the 360. :\

Well in that case I'm glad I got a PS3 after all. Though mine also freezes a lot too, mostly if I pause music and then try unpausing it I thought it was just mine that froze.

Yup my first ps3 died also (it was a 60gb model) I had just come home from picking up Street Fighter IV and after i unwrapped the game i turn on the ps3...and YLOD ... it sucked, not only because the ps3 was dead but because i had opened street fighter so i couldnt return it lol >___< To add one more level of frustration, my warranty had run out a few weeks before. If you have to buy parts...it usually is not worth it, because in my case to replace the motherboard it would cost about the same price as buying a new one... I finally ended up buying a new ps3 back when killzone 2 came out, (80gb model) and it has been working perfectly so far...i just home there isnt a repeat of what happened with the first one

Ok... That scares me to no end. Now my fear is back. I can't afford a PS3 every couple years, let alone if it fries earlier than that. It's too expensive a machine... I can only have one. My PS2 got laser problems countless times, but it was a lot cheaper fixing it than getting another one. If that's not the case with the PS3, I think I'll have to pass this generation. That's pretty sad. T_T
