I'm working on a lengthy Silent Hill story based off a forum RP I started a while back but never finished. The basic concept goes like this:
Elizabeth Guard is 8 months pregnant, penniless, unemployed and alone. Desperate for help, she begins to search for the baby's father, who recently abandoned her. His trail leads her to Silent Hill, and soon after arriving she discovers she cannot leave. She is set upon by horrific monsters, and hounded by a dark being that seems intent on taking Elizabeth's baby away from her. She must fight through the nightmare, not only for her own life, but that of her unborn child.
I plan on utilizing a lot of themes with this story that directly involve both mother and child, with Silent Hill playing off not only Elizabeth's inner demons, but the baby's primitive psyche as well. A multitude of themes immediately come to mind: birth trauma, separation anxiety, misogynism, maternal instinct, as well as many others.
I don't want to go over the same old ground too much; while I plan to revisit at least one or two familiar areas from the games (Alchemilla Hospital is definitely on the list), I want to take the opportunity to explore previously unseen areas and present my take on what else the town has to offer. I also don't plan on shoving in familiar creatures simply for the sake of having them. Pyramid Head will not make an appearance, for instance, but I do have another antagonist in mind, one that more directly relates to the themes of maternity, life and (of course) death.
I'm still in the planning stages of the story, but I already know it will take many twists and turns. A lot of the subject matter will be controversial, and may offend some of the more sensitive readers. One such theme is that of abortion, which I know is a touchy subject for many. While Silent Hill has definitely hit on a few controversial themes, like rape and euthanasia, I am aware these concepts are far less prevalent. My story doesn't revolve around abortion, but it does play a larger role. I will try to handle it with the delicacy it deserves, while at the same time using it as a vehicle for character depth and growth.
And that's what I've got so far. I welcome any and all criticism, positive or negative, and would appreciate suggestions for locations, creature design and so on. I'll be writing an outline over the next few days, and come up with a complete list of the characters, creatures, and the locations Elizabeth will visit in her journey through Silent Hill, but I wanted to get people's opinions first and see how such a story would be received. Let me know what you think!
