Ah, for people already ready to hate the 3D, I get where you're coming from, I have reservations as well, but there's always the possibility they'll do it right. 3D can be more than things flashing in our faces. A good article I read today that sums it up:
www.cracked.com/article_18877_4-reasons-3-d-movies-dont-have-to-suck.html About the glasses, though, there's no way out. But they aren't really THAT annoying. :x
(A bit off-topic, but not really - what I don't want and do want from a new movie):
It's funny, this morning I kinda ranted on the things I found really upsetting about the SH movie on another website. I liked the movie when I first watched it, but I found out much of what I was saying about it was denial because I really wanted to like it. I couldn't watch it more than a second time, and the second time it was only for the visuals and music. That's what they did right. And the first moments were very faithful to the game as well. All the rest though...
Every single change in the story and characters were not only completely unnecessary, but the "reasons" behind them were insulting.
- Harry's sex change because a man wouldn't go after his daughter like that? Not only that is preposterous, it caused the studio to force Sean Bean's character into the movie, and his scenes didn't help the pacing OR the story, at all.
- Cheryl to Sharon is ridiculous enough. But changing the whole story behind the Cult and Alessa (and subsequently Dahlia) ? And all of that because "western audiences wouldn't like a pagan cult, they can only identify with Christian puritans, so we have to turn the story into a huge witch-hunting cliche"? That's not only untrue (as proved by many movies, books and games. We have paganism in fiction since... ever!) but insulting as well. It's just a BS excuse to change things, there's no reasonable explanation for that. It shows no respect for the source materials, for the fans, and for the western audiences in general.
+ The photography was great. And sound, but that was recycled from the games, so, yeah.
A movie has to change some things, mostly regarding pacing and character development in the absence of such. These are technical. But they require a director which is not lazy and wants to really work in adapting something.
Those up there? Nope. They were unnecessary and only spoiled what could have been a great movie. You want to tell your own story, that's fine. Make it then, don't just plagiarize (sp) the game.
Because - and this is my main beef with game movies - that's what these "game adaptations" are. "Official rip-offs". Just a way for directors to include a game's setting or any number of elements in their own story with no problems. They have no intention of making a good adaptation, they just want to make their own movie with ideas they found cool. "Oh, look at that game, it has some good ideas there. I can use that in a movie! Time to try and get the rights to an "adaptation"!" < That's what's been going on for many years, and I see no sign of changing.
That's so obvious it pains me how many people don't seem to notice it. And the related gaming companies have also huge part of the blame here, for not caring about the integrity of their own franchises.
And I'm not even going into how badly the movie affected the subsequent games. They took too much from the movie, and the old speech of "OK, at least it's just a movie, it won't affect the games we love!" turned into "Oh, crap".
So, what I most want from a new movie, is a change of heart. A change of approach. I want a director and writers who desire to do a real adaptation. Like you see some fan-made movies try to do. If official movies, with budget, could be made with in the same frame of mind, that would be awesome. If this movie turns out to be poorly executed, but at least the people involved were honest, it would give me hope for the future. They must think differently from the people who made the first movie.
Reading what the director/writer says on the web does little for me. I've had many disappointments with that. I remember many people believed Christophe Gans to be, quote, "THE Right director for a Silent Hill movie!!" after people from the movie said how much they admired the world, how much they understood it and how they wanted to make a terrific adaptation to the big screen. Then, the news about the changes started to surface, and... Well, denial and/or disappointment.
I'll just say that anyone that preaches the movie did anything right besides the visual/sound and atmosphere of the first minutes in the town... Well, they are from the part of the audience that didn't know or didn't like the series story and characters in the first place. So, good for them. They don't get to be disappointed. Just don't tell me the fans should feel the same.

Oh, God, this was another rant, wasn't it? Forgive me, I've been really pensive and kinda grumpy lately. I hope it's coherent and makes sense. I think it does.
OK. I'm doing as always: hoping for the best. And digging for news. Time to check the director feed out of curiosity. I'll take everything with a ton of salt. Though I'm already very disappointed they aren't scrapping the first movie. That will only bring bad things. :\
