First you draw every day. Then after a while you start drawing something good every day; that's how it works...
But I don't know anyone who can do even half decent art on the machine without a tablet

Probably had something to do with dropping out of art school due to lack of monies. As for tablets, that's reassuring, because I've been trying to draw something decent with a computer for well over 15 years with no success. ^_^ I remember the computes we used for this shit in high school, probably had 10 Gig hard drives and slow as all hell. Every time you'd use the airbrush it'd freeze up. Good times! Actually, no. This was really the reason I'd spend my time using the actual airbrush on paper, instead of using the photoshop one. And thanks Crimson One, it still needs work in a couple places but it's getting there.

Indeed.
Alx is right on the $ too. Using a comp for drawing without a tablet is like going for a drive without a car. You can probably find one on Craigslist if that exists wherever you live.
I got a really nice one of CL for way cheaper than it would have cost new, and it was new in the box. I can't believe I ever lived without it now. You can set things like thickness and opacity to be affected by pen pressure, so you have way more control over whats going on.

I think I'll just give up on digital for now. I have way too many medical bills to even consider buying something cheap that I don't technically need.
Someday I might look on CL though.
When I was in college for animation, I don't even know that they used such stuff. We always drew on paper, then scanned into photoshop and did it that way. Will probably continue doing that if I ever feel the need. ^_^

I hate using tablets, they don't feel natural to me, like trying to walk on ice. you just don't get that grip you get with paper. but that's okay because I am pretty badass with the line tool in flash or other simular programs, by skecthing over imported drawings or photographs with the line tool I can get nice detail for my animations

For years I relied on lineart to scan in and color. It took forever but I can finally layout on the tablet. That having been said, I still resort to drawing hard to figure out bits and scan them in...

Well that was a quick change. haha I was just about to comment on understanding the nightmare of medical bills, and how that would also deter me. Congrats on the purchase! Well dang...now I hope you like it... I'm sure you will! I can definitely understand the need for grip sensation. I was never really a "drawer" anyway, so I guess it never bothered me. I do much more manipulation than I do actual creation. Would love to get good at drawing someday, even if it is just semi cartoony flash looking stuff. If it makes you feel any better, I owe over $100,000 in school loans, and talked myself into buying a signed book by my favorite author ($95) the other day, and now my account is nearly empty...

hooray for impulse buys! But yeah, I look forward to trying it out. Hope they don't take too long to ship it.
Yes, I owe ten year's worth of college tuition, and then a bunch for hospital stays. I just try not to think about it too much, lol... my account is nearly empty and I am currently fighting the urge to buy a pizza today, since I really don't need pizza. ^_^

Yeah, seems like just about everyone is down to their last dollar lately... Lemme know when it is time for the class war
But I bet that once you get the hang of your tablet, you'll never want to go back! Looking forward to seeing what you will do with it...

looking forward to it coming in the mail. i hate waiting for stuff. =0(
[hops up and down impatiently]
finished the one grandmother painting, and my mom and her cousins auction off junk to help pay for their next year's vacation (they all vacation together each year, the granddaughters of that grandmother), so I gave her that and it's being auctioned off by my relatives tomorrow, amongst themselves. lol. The one asked me today if I remember her. She died 9 years before I was born, so I most definitely do not.
need to clean off this desk, also, if i mean to have room to actually use the tablet. terrible mess i have here.

hahaha, indeed. Well, I got a fairly large one (TWSS), and honestly there isn't much use for the room, for me anyway. I've noticed I only ever use a small area of it. Before I had this one I borrowed a smaller one from my roommate, and it worked great.
