Just finished The Red Tree by Caitlin R. Kiernan. The Red Tree is about an Author (Sarah Crowe) who moves into an old house in Rhode Island to work on her past due novel. In the basement of the old house she finds a manuscript written by the last occupant, a Professor. The manuscript is concerning a Red Oak tree on the property that is basically reported to be evil. She investigates, and horror ensues. One thing that this book does good, among many, is create a really unsettling atmosphere. All the horror or terror in this book basically stems (pun intended) from the oak tree, and I was a little skeptical about this at first, but she pulled it off quite well. It's not a gory in your face horror, but a psychological one that builds on top of it's self through what the character learns about the history of the house and the tree. The horrific events are of the more subtle variety, suggesting an unknown supernatural horror, as opposed to depicting it outright. I guess in that way it vaguely reminded me of Lovecraft, although I think this book comes much closer to House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danieleski. Both have a protagonist finding a written work of someone else, and commenting on it while they investigate the same. On a scale of 1-5 's I give it If you like a more subtle horror novel that reads fast and includes mild lesbian sex, you will probably like it.
