Tired of zombies yet? (Okay, we don't know what they are yet.) Touted over the last few days as a PS3 exclusive the only details at first were this BBC clip about infected ants ( Here). I find that interesting all on its own, personally. Then came this video about a man reminiscing about the good old days. Then it was finally revealed at the VGAs (ugh) A survival horror game from Naughty Dog. Not only that it was a secret in the first level of Uncharted 3 Given the nature of the fungus and how it spreads itself, before the release of the official trailer, I got the mental image of a person wandering through a city in a gas mask, with 3 or 4 people perched on lightpoles with fungus growths coming out of them. Or they're perched on the ledges of buildings, high places to spread the spores. Not running around. Here's what the infected look like. At least its original I'll give it a chance. I just hope its better than Uncharted 3 (a game they flat out admitted that they thought up of the set pieces first and then built the story and game around those)

Doesn't look like all the infected will look like that. The first one downed in the trailer looked relatively normal. I dunno, There's always potential, as long as Naughty dog haven't done, as you say, what they did with Uncharted 3. It would be great if they do things 28 days later style, with the game starting out being about the Zombie infestiation, but ending then degrading to the Human enemy. The dialogue at the end of the trailer makes me doubt that a little (then again, maybe the first guy downed in a human, he had ammo in his tactical vest).

Yup, I think your correct, the first two running through the door looked to have only minor fungification.
As for the first guy, I got the impression he was another regular survivor. I kinda get an I Am Legend feel from the trailer.
I kinda hope this will be a true survival horror game. Weapons are scarce, firearm and melee, you dread every encounter, etc.
Like Siren where its better to hide than to take on the enemy directly.
Someone at ND tweeted that he's been working on it for the last two years.....maybe we'll see it in 2012...?

Some studio's do try to announce games around a year before release. I'm pretty sure thats how Naughty Dog have gone with the last 2 uncharted games. Announced at the Spike VGA's and came out the following year in November.

Fucking stoked for this game. Getting a very heavy "The Road" vibe, and I'm loving that.

Maybe zombie is the wrong term. The lead thing appears to only smell the freshly beaten survivor, not eat it. Maybe they're infected like the Infected in the 28....Later series (don't feed on flesh, die by conventional means, don't rise after death, etc)
As for human based enemies, I imagine we'd see them, as we always do in horror games.
It holds a nice mirror to the fact that humans can be just as cruel / violent as their infected counterpart.

Initial voice cast has been revealedJoel will be voiced by Troy Baker. You may recognize him as Snow in Final Fantasy XIII and Two-Face in Arkham City. He is also voicing main man Booker DeWitt in Bioshock Infinite and James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2 HD. Ellie is voiced by Ashley Johnson. Some bigger work includes Ben 10, Teen Titans and the TV show Growing Pains. Did you notice something in the trailer, something that is missing from alot of games now? It was COLOR. That was because the lead designer from Enslaved is now works at Naughty Dog. I thought Enslaved was a nice surprise of a game. It had amazing voice work by Andy Serkis and Lindsey Shaw. Little weak on the gameplay side of things but good on the story side (which matters more to me) I know everyone on the web is saying it but DAMN if Ellie doesn't look like Ellen Paige. I kinda can't unsee it, like the Bioshock 2 Bomberman cover.... Finally some new artwork got released as well:

Man...this game is looking better and better to me. And I had no idea that Troy Baker did Two-Face in Arkham City, that's too awesome.

Behind The Scenes VideoNothing much revealed. They say it'll be out next year but the video was recorded in late 2011 so.....late 2012 early 2013? The Uncharted series releases in October-November so that'd be my best bet. An interesting tidbit is that the two lead developers for Uncharted 2 moved onto the Last of US. Also Joel's and Ellie's relationship is more of a father/daughter. They don't say if they're related or not

New details: - The Last of Us will share the core technology of last year’s super hit game: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception with a few changes.
- The Last of Us will focus more on non-verbal communication thereby putting more emphasis on facial expressions.
- The actor’s voices will be captured along with their physical movement, similar to what Naughty Dog have done in the Uncharted franchise.
- The VGA 2011 trailer was actually planned to be shown at E3 2011, showing an unarmed Ellie.
- With The Last of Us, Naughty Dog will try to explain ‘something’ about human beings and how they exist.
- The Last of Us will take place across several cities in America.
- The Last of Us will see Naughty Dog transitioning to awesome environments and minimalist story telling.
- Neil Druckmann says "It's a love story - not a romantic one, but a love story between these two characters", referring to the unlikely pairing of the young Ellie and Sam Fisher lookalike Joel.
- The relationship between 40 year old Joel and 14 year old Ellie will be what sets the game out from other post-apocalyptic tales - "No one else is doing that character-driven survival game".
- Media that inspired the Naughty Dog team includes The Road, No Country For Old Men, The Walking Dead, and City Of Thieves.
- "[Character driven stories are] all about the pressures of the world forcing them to make really difficult decisions, and you learn something about who we are as human beings. And with games, no one's approaching it from this character side. It's all campy, over the top violence...how much more blood? How much more gore?"
- "Who unleashed the virus? Bleurgh! It has nothing to do with the characters."
- No badass heroism from Joel - "He's a survivor", and nothing more. "I think he's going to turn the model of a hero on its ass"
- However, what is revealed is that it is third person, takes place in various US locations and it'll be different to any Naughty Dog game before it. "Uncharted is pulp action - with The Last Of Us, everything is constructed around the tone [of this particular title]."
- The gunplay will be very different, with sparse ammunition and mechanics probably similar to Resident Evil. Still, it's all powered by Uncharted's tech
- The story is king - "The definition of a story is that at the end, the character is irreversibly changed, and that's the whole focus of the project - getting through with these two characters".
Source 1Source 2I like the sounds of how what actually caused the outbreak may never be explained. Just like what caused the world to end in The Road, it's alluded to but never fully explained.

Sounds promising, Kinda hope the story is a little 'elastic', and lets the players make decisions in regard to the story.

I like the artwork, and that ant creature is actually pretty scary. Nightmare inducing scary. I hope it will be a game focused on hiding, as others have said, and not just blowing the brains out of everything you see.

Tons of Info + ScansHmmmm, no co-op play but there will be an online component. How does THAT work. Kinda disappointed that you'll focus more on the human encounters than the infected. Interesting choice they list the Road as an inspiration, seeing as no one has the balls to do something that depressing.

Good God, this game is brutal E3 TrailerI like the banter as they explore the city. It kind of bothers me that Ammo is readily available since they have made a point that bullets are like gold in this environment. I wonder if the melee finishers are context sensitive. Like if you're fighting a guy and you're near a wall will he use or if he's near a window can you throw him out or something. Overall, very nice
