I have played 1-4 with my friend with no history of playing Silent Hill over the past year, and I want to play Origins with him too. We can't really do that with a handheld so our only option would be PS2. I've heard not so great things about it, but it is it worth buying used? Is it a completely butchered game?

I liked it. I still haven't been able to play through Homecoming all the way through because it is so far from what I enjoy about SH, but this game held my interest. It is not nearly on the level of 1-4, but it is a fun game at least in the vein of the originals.
I also imagine the game will be quite cheap to buy used these days, so it's not much of an investment.

The PS2 port was a total glitchy piece of shit for me. It's by far one of my most hated games in Silent Hill.
What really got to me more than anything was that the music would stop looping. So really atmospheric points would be completely ruined by the lack of music.
No I would say hell no. Play it on PSP or use the TV cables for it and play it. The PS2 port is total garbage as far as I'm concerned.
This also happened to me on two separate copies too. Some people say their copies worked fine. I so wish mine did since I really loved Origins.

I have 0rigins for PS2 and PSP. I like the PS2 port all right, didn't encounter any bugs or anything. The graphics are lackluster between PS1 and PS2 graphics, but it's still worth playing. I'd say go for it.

If you don't have the option to play it on the PSP, the PS2 Version is a decent substitute.
