This might be a stupid question, but please keep in mind that I'm a total computer gamer and so I pay very little attention to consoles.
DH wants a PS3 BAD. I thought I read somewhere that the PS3 can play PS2 games, and even some PS1 games. Is this true? If so, then it's worth the price to me. If not, then he's just going to have to wait longer.
And has anyone bought a used one on Ebay or at a gaming store? Is it worth it?
Also, apparently they come in different GB sizes. Is it worth it to pay more for the highest you can get? Or do most games not need that much? Keeping in mind that we have only a couple of PS2 games and probably won't get all that many PS3 ones, what would you recommend?

I thought I read somewhere that the PS3 can play PS2 games, and even some PS1 games. Is this true? Sort of. Some can, some can't. The short version is that there are currently no models available in stores with PS2 backwards compatibility. The long version... well, you're probably better off clicking this link the for me to try to summarize it. To my knowledge, all models of PS3 are backwards compatible with the PS1, however certain games (Silent Hill being one of them) have issues. Also, apparently they come in different GB sizes. Is it worth it to pay more for the highest you can get? Or do most games not need that much? Keeping in mind that we have only a couple of PS2 games and probably won't get all that many PS3 ones, what would you recommend? More gigs lets you store more stuff. However, unlike the Xbox 360, the PS3 hard drive is user upgradeable. You just need to get the same kind of hard drive that laptops use, then you can switch it yourself. The does not void your warranty. To be honest, from the sound of things, unless the few PS3 games you're interested in are must-haves, or you could use a cheap Blu-Ray player, it doesn't sound to me like you have much reason to get one. Hold off for now. There are rumors circulating about a price drop coming, possibly as soon as April.

Well, the price drop news is good, especially since it will probably be at least April before we get one.
The reason I'm considering a PS3 is because I can't currently play Homecoming on my PC. I would need a video card upgrade. So far, it looks like I'd be shelling out a good $100 for the video card I need.
So I'm debating whether I should skip the upgrade, get a PS3, and then be able to play Homecoming on that, as well as Origins (which I currently have for PS2 but have no PS2 to play it on; I had to borrow one to play it awhile back). I guess I got it backwards about the compatibility though. So, if models that are backward-compatible with the PS2 are not sold in stores, how can I get one? How can I make sure I'm getting the right one?
Plus, DH has been wanting the PS3, and I'm sure if we have one he'll get more games for it. He's more a console gamer than a computer gamer. I'm the one who prefers the PC.
Thanks for all the info.

If you can find a used console in a store, check the model number and compare it to those from the link I put in my last post. Beyond that, get lucky on ebay? The last backwards compatible unit was the 60gig model released with the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle last year. If you're lucky you might be able to find one of those somewhere, but I tend to doubt it.

Models with backwards compatability are getting rarer and rarer, and steadily raising in price via online sale places.
And yes, the last BC compatible PS3 was the MGS4 Bundle 80GB. The other PS2 BC ones were the original 20GB and 60GB.
Depending on the store you're shopping at, they SHOULD know what model they're selling used. At Gamestop we do, because they differ a lot in price, the PS2 BC ones are often more exspensive used than the new ones.
Prepare to spend some cash getting one with PS2 BC. And as a word of caution, from the 80GB things were imrpoved in the system thermally, they run quieter and cooler. It's not to say the old models are junk, just a heads up.

The price and the backward compatibility are the key issues keeping me from purchasing one. i want to play Heavenly Sword so bad it hurts but until they slash those EUR$350 in at least half, I´m not budging.
I purchased my Sega Saturn for $350 as well and to this day I still hammer my head against the wall over that.

Heavenly Sword isn't worth it. At least wait for God of War III. Trust me on that. And yes, backwards compatibility would be great to have - if you can, find a model which has it. Also, never underestimate the possible homebrew options! There's nothing decrypted yet, but eventually, there's going to be loads of stuff for it, just like the PSP. EDIT: And yes, PS1 games work on ALL models of the PS3 (this is because the same emulator is integrated into the software of both the PSP and the PS3) - the PS2 games are dependent on either the Emotion Engine chip installed in the older models or on software emulation in limited models - these are discontinued due to production costs. (Firmware updates could possibly resolve the problem though... Somehow...)

This is why I tried really hard to get my MGS4 bundle. I got the last one in the city and paid a tad extra for it (as kind of a tip to pursuade the guy to sell it to me).
All the PS2 games I've played so far work just fine. There's odd sound glitches (primarily in Metal Gear Solid 2 far) but nothing that ruins game play. Just a brief funky noise.
I haven't played SH1 yet on it but I did on my friends PS3. Soon as I got a gun and shot it it made this wretched loud noise. It was pretty much unplayable and I'm hoping there's either a patch for it or that's not the case with my PS3.
I am however hoping there's a glitch for the PS2 version of Origins that somehow makes it more... playable.

The only problem I have with the PS3 is that it seems to lack downloads. Microsoft has made sure a lot of cool downloads stay Xbox exclusive.

Apparently it would be too expensive to make all PS3s backward compatible due to each game having to be added seperately. I have the 40GB and discovered I couldn't play PS2 games when I tried to insert one into the drive.

Yes, and if they were to dedicate resources to assuring hardware agreement with individual PS2 titles, it would make more "sense" to offer them up as downloadable titles so that you have to pay for the games again rather than just putting in the disc you already own. Look for a line of downloadable PS2 classics sometime down the road. It's annoying for most people and convenient for a few, but Sony wouldn't make money if everyone had PS3s that they could just put their discs in.

They wouldn't make quite as much money, but if they offered it as an option alongside that of being able to download them as well they'd make more satisfied customers.
