Another thing to consider is that the Playstation 2 still sells. Seriously, check sales charts. Its still doing really well.
While I'm sure the removal of backwards compatibility was at least partially to cut costs as Sony has claimed, I would not be at all surprised if another reason was to keep PS2 sales going for as long as possible.
Personally, if/when I get a PS3, I'm seriously considering snagging a cheap PS2 as well, to serve as a backup for when my current unit eventually dies.

Some day I might end up buying another PS2 just so I can play PS1 and 2 games without any problems. I'd like to play SH1 without having to hear an insanely annoying high pitched sound everytime I shot a gun.

Personally, if/when I get a PS3, I'm seriously considering snagging a cheap PS2 as well, to serve as a backup for when my current unit eventually dies. Very good points. I don’t think even Sony could have known that the PS2s sales would remain so strong for so long that it’s worth considering whether it may be cutting into a potential PS3 user base. Even though I made sure to get a BC PS3 when they were still available, I really don’t think it’s that big of a deal. The PS2 has to be coming down to $99 sometime soon, and people are still paying more than that to seek out the backward compatible PS3s. Just like I play PSone games on the original Playstation, I play PS2 games on the PS2 when I want to see them as they were intended to look. Software is usually most accurately resolved on its native hardware. It would have been too big of a blow to their legacy and to forward thinking gamers with funds earmarked for a PS3 if Sony were to renounce backward compatibility prior to launch, and to ape what they’d always criticized Microsoft for by switching to support their past systems via software.

Yesterday I saw the PS2 on sale at eur$90 out here.
I really like what I see in the PS3 lineup, but I still have oodles of games to finish playing, from Devil May Cry 3 to Fatal Frame 3.
At this rate, by the time I´m ready to get a PS3, there´ll be a PS4 coming out. ;D
