I just replayed SH2 after a lengthy absence, and finished it yesterday (getting the Maria ending for the first time). I just kept thinking throughout the whole game how much it felt like I was "home". I know if I found myself in the town of Silent Hill for real I'd probably sh*t myself, but I can't help but wish the town really existed. It just feels so comfortable in the game. Not in a "so comfortable it's no longer scary" kind of way. No, even after multiple plays through, the game still scares the crap out of me. But it still feels like home, like I belong there. Am I crazy, in good company, or both?

I feel the same way, SH2 is like visiting my hometown, I just walk down the streets feeling all wistful and such. Then a monster appears, and I'm all like: Hello old friend. Then it spits acid in my face, since I can only play these games on hard difficulty...

Heh, funny you should say that, KAOz and i were talking the other day about how intensely awesome SH2 is even compared to any of the most recent games out today, and how when you see clips of it or put on the OST even, it can still strike you as hard as if you were playing the scenes through for the first time again. I love it, and back in the day when it was still new to me i found it hard to not start it again after each completion.(fun fact; this actually both annoyed and freaked out my ex quiiite a lot..XP) Immersing myself in the whole environment of it always felt so right, and the discomfort was always so...well, comfortable in some twisted way i guess. Even just writing about it now makes me want to go and fire it up yet again.. Sooo yeah, i think i can agree with you, i dunno if i would class it as a slip of sanity or "good" company, but at least you aint alone eh.XD

I knew you guys would understand! ;D
And Violincello, lol at your post! I have that "old friend" feeling about the monsters too. I wish I could give PH a big ol' hug without getting cut in half, lol.

This thread is kinda bizarre since me and my friend were just talking about this on the weekend.
I know exactly what you're saying. All the Silent Hill games have that 'home' feel to me. The music, the environments, the story. Even Homecoming is already a little bit nostalgic for me.
But nothing compares to Silent Hill 2. Just thinking about it sometimes makes me smile in that screwed up Silent Hill way. I really want to replay it again now ~ ~ I gotta get it back from my friend.
Something about the characters and how human they feel as well as everything about the town. It's as you guys say, it has that 'old friend' feel.
Nostalgia is the perfect word for it absolutely.

Maybe it's the long way to the town in the beginning. Maybe it's the fact that you spend a good amount of time on the foggy streets of South Vale.
But it sure feels awesome.
I also have that same feeling here and there. Especially when I play with Maria. The mansion is one of the most atmospheric places in my gaming experiences. Also, the park and the hotel.
It's like a little piece of limbo. No real torment, just sadness, yet... It has a certain... charm.

I even have dreams about the first two SH games, I am so familiar with them, haha.
I hadn't played SH2 in a while either because it wouldn't install right with Vista (works fine on my desktop PCs with XP though, but I don't have them at school with me. SH3and SH4 work fine on this computer though).
Silent Hill games are just special, that's all, you know... I mean, I like other video games but SH games mean more to me.

I can certainly relate... I obviously feel likewise and SH2 is still the only game that had me take like half an hour just walking down a God damn forest trail that turned out to have no enemies at all!! I think what makes this second installment so much better has a lot to do with the characters and setting. To me it just seems more easily relatable, with its down to earth (although highly tragic and morbid) human emotions and problems in focus. Cults and stranger personalities appear to inhabit the other games, especially the latest. The first installment might have been the more scary had it been released at a time with better graphics. F... it, now I have to play it again! What ever am I gonna do about exams??

Ya I feel the same way when I play 1,2 or 3 though they still scare me to death, usually can only play an hour till I start to lose it which is due to a mental condition I have that warps reality. And no im not exggerating or joking. When I see old clips of it, it still strikes deeply. All three protagonists have a deep meaning to me along with some of the other characters. The strange cult ones are very real. XD
