Why exactly did the rooms flood with water?
Did it represent James' sadness (tears)? Toluca Lake? I've been wondering about it lately and would like to know your opinions.
(I'm sure it's been discussed before, but I don't know what everyone came up with.)

I think it's just because the hotel burned down. It's been quite a while since I beat SH2 and I've been meaning to. So as for details I couldn't quite tell you right now.
I'm just thinking it's because of the hotel fire and obviously fire fighters probably damn near flooded the place trying to put it out. So I think once James opened his eyes to what he did, there was a transition into a surreal reality once again when he left the room.
Hopefully there's someone here who might have a little bit more insight on this.

I suppose it could represent James' guilt. There must have been times he contemplated suicide (hence the In Water ending) and water also reflects so it could be that James can now see himself for what he is in the water of the lake his wife loved so much.
(Farfetched no doubt XD)

Well, water is one of the main visuals in SH2. Hues of green and blueish dominate, and water is always present in one way or another (drops, drains, the "wet" feeling of rooms). The direct connection could be made only with In Water, but...
James and Mary loved looking at the lake in the park right? It was the first association when James thought of their "special place". Water is also a symbol of clarity and cleanliness - the fact it's always somewhere "out there", beyond one's reach, shows James' subconscious desire to accept the truth.
I guess. Still, it's a pleasant change from rusty metal.

Hmm...I see water as a cleanser. Perhaps it is the process James must go through to cleanse himself of his wrong doings. It fits with the ending. It's his path of redemption, and in a way, rebirth. Think perhaps? We have talked about water in school before and what it symbolizes. Usually it comes up as a cleansing or transformation. They use it in a lot of movies to symbolize a characters progression. Man I gotta play SH2 again. I love that part where you're going through and it's all wet and burnt. Coming out of doors in the wrong places...Great!
