What's REALLY crazy is at the beginning of the game when James gets the radio, if you listen closely to the static, there's hands down the biggest spoiler in gaming history right there. I'll say it down in a spoiler. Mary says on the radio, 'Why did you kill me?' Took me years to process what she said. Even if someone caught onto that the first time, I don't think they'd necessarily process what that means either. Exactly. Once you hear it, you cannot unhear it.

Yeah, you're right about the cult thing. If they make another Silent Hill game, a brand new one, if it has any of the cult in it I will go nuts! They need another like Silent Hill 2. Nothing will be able to touch or even come close to SH2's story, but they could at least try.

It's strange, because Konami knows we're practically begging them to release one without the cult.
You can see them pushing elements of SH2 in Homecoming and Origins. Shattered Memories as well. Family apparently has become a massive element in these newer games. Even 4 is all about family in the broader vision.
Homecoming would've been one of the best in the series if they stuck to those aspects and if they REALLY needed to add the cult, simply allude to its existence like SH2 did.

SH2 is definitely my favorite of the series because apart from 4 it's the most self-contained, being independent of what I call the "Alessa Trilogy" or any specific history of Silent Hill. You don't need to know anything about the town except, as Angela Orosco so succinctly put it, "there's something wrong with it." The story is engaging and well written, the creepy ambience never lets up even when you're not exactly scared out of your wits, and any one of the endings is quite satisfying in its own way.
I don't know how many times I've played this one, but it never gets boring.
