Picture of the slim from the show floor: twitpic.com/edb9dA while back there were rumors of Sony getting a patent for full software Emotion Engine emulation. If that gets incorporated, then $300 is a steal. As it stands, I'm already sold. Edit: Better pics here.

The PS3 is a beast. But now its a smaller beast ;D
I am stoked for this price drop. It'll boost business hopefully.
Now PS3 just needs to release some blockbusters!
(Dead Rising 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Heavy Rain, etc)

That's cool. Not that I really need one. I'm a bit attached to my PS3. It's the MGS4 model and the last (and was also the LAST one in my city and anywhere nearby) model with backwards compatibility.
That they stopped supporting backwards compatibility was a huge blow to me in terms of the Playstation series. If this thing shits out on me then I'm going to be right choked. Thankfully, I do have a working PS2 still too.
It's about time they did this though. As Vaco says, the PS3 is an absolute beast.

System specs are here: bitcast-ons.bitgravity.com/gawker/assets/images/9/2009/08/systemspecs.jpgIt's also already listed up on Wikipedia along with the previous models: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_3#Model_comparisonNo reason to not at least give people N-draft support for what they've taken out at this point. No backwards compatibility, no "Install other OS" (not that many people used that anyway), and so on. However, it seems that there is going to be a "B" version to the 20xxA of the currently announced Slims, so maybe those will have more to them. But I've got a Exx model, so it doesn't really matter to me since I got one before Sony started cutting things out. ;D If the 20xxB is worthwhile, I might pick up one of those somewhere down the line if my current one were to ever crap out.

sorry not really into into consols if you get me just got ps2 atm, so ps3 this new one can it play ps1/2 games or backwards ability yet? Only PS1 games. The PS2 compatability was supposedly removed to reduce costs, although I don't see how much more expensive it was to just keep the software emulators installed. The specific differences between models is listed in the Wikipedia link I provided above.

The PS2 compatability was supposedly removed to reduce costs, although I don't see how much more expensive it was to just keep the software emulators installed. Because they weren't pure software emulators. There was still some hardware involved, and that's where the expense was. 6 or 8 weeks ago, Sony filed a patent for full software emulation of the Emotion Engine. In theory this means any PS3 is just a firmware upgrade away from being PS2 compatible. Sony has since said they don't plan on doing so. I suspect that this is, as I mentioned in another thread, because the PS2 still sells, and pretty well at that. Its kind of senseless to undermine a source of profit. On the other hand, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see such an upgrade offered down the line when the PS2 sales do eventually dry up. Something to the effect of "Your PS3 library just grew by thousands of titles" would be decent marketing. Some might ask that if they don't intend to put in backwards compatibility, why patent the emulation? Simply put, its a legal foothold to keep someone else from doing it.

Great, now I just need a job. >_< And I'll wait to see if this Slim model has any problems like, lets say, overheating.
