Do you know of any anime titles that replicate the Silent Hill experience?
I´ve watched Boogiepop Phantom which is a mysterious riddle filled with shadows and ghouls in the night... but the populated streets break the mood.
Paranoia Agent delves into the human psyche but it too feels kinda crowded with all the urban noise, media buzz and neighbour gossip.
Ergo Proxy has the fear and doom´n´gloom athmosphere but the futuristic athmosphere are as far as you can be from the rusting 70s cars that populate Toluca lake.
N.G. Evangelion has the deserted streets I´m craving for but the sound of EVAs stomping the ground and AT shields clashing quickly break that spell.
What titles are there out there?

Higurashi no naku koro ni always reminds me of Silent Hill. It's creepy and psychological although it's a little hard going at first because it's like a typical upbeat anime but if you watch the first episode all the way through you'll see there's a mystery to unlock.

I would like to watch anime similar to SH, too. I've watched NGE but I think its way too different.
I havent thought of SH when I watched Higurashi but its a cool anime. And I think you should watch at least 4 episodes.

There's a 25 minute anime "film" called KakuRenBo: Hide & Seek. Short, but creepy as heck. One of my favorites.

Kino's Journey is amazing and does have some rather creepy episodes (the second episode comes to mind).

I think that Perfect Blue and Paprika have that SH vibe, if not look. They both deal with the nature of identity and reality
By far the most SH-like live action film I've seen lately is the Pang Brothers' Recyle. Of course, this is a more traditionalist Chinese take on the theme but see what you think

I'd also like some recommendations, anime in general, not just SH-like.
I've put Ergo Proxy on my list, but I have no idea what other anime to get. I don't like lots of episodes, I can't follow that - any shorter series (5 - 10 episodes) or a good movie?

I my me strawberry eggs (13 eps) Elfen Lied (13 eps)
If you like comedy I recommend Puni Puni Poemi. It's only two episodes long but it's really good.

Mmm, the Silent Hill experience, let's see...
Ghost Hound Shinto mythos, urban legends, tons of psychological stuff, ghosts/spirits, out-of-body experiences, weird dreams, otherworlds, dark and brooding atmosphere, and dark ambient music almost identical to that of Akira Yamaoka (!) -- all that makes this anime one of the closest to Silent Hill experience I've ever seen. The only downside (imo) is that it's not very mature -- all the main characters are school kids, there's no blood and violence, and it's not even that scary. Still great despite of that. Somewhat reminds Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, btw.

Unfortunately I don't think I've ever seen an anime much like SH.
As far as horror goes though, check out DevilMan and Biohunter. So long as a LOT of blood and gore doesn't bother you.

Unfortunately I don't know any anime that feels like Silent Hill. But for a normal mystery/sci-fi you have Serial Experiments Lain. I haven't finished watching it yet, but it's been interesting so far.
I'm not watching any other serious animes at the moment though. I'm just following Maria Holic (comedy). It's... interesting. *smiles*

Serial Experiments Lain is a fine example; it has the 'real' world and an otherworld. It deals with identity. I highly reccomend it
"So THAT'S what an IPv8 stack looks like? Really?..."
I'm going to reccomend Fight! Iczer One. Definate correlation with Silent Hill and has a nice HPL vibe to boot. Plus, lots and lots of fan service. If you know what I mean. And I think you know what I mean...
Engrish is awesome, except when it hurts my brain. Then it is even better
