Just got back. I'll put it as simply as I can.
Anyone who doesn't like this movie is dumb.

I watched it yesterday. Never have I enjoyed a movie so much in the cinema for quite a while. It's a good movie by my standard when I don't start thinking about a toilet break midway through.

Well, I dislike Star Trek to begin with, and dislike most of the cast to this new remake as well, so consider me dumb. I'm just doubting that this movie will change my perspective on the series as a whole.

Yup, you're dumb. Report to the Agony Booth.

I'm not a huge Star Trek fan but I do enjoy it quite a bit. I think two of my cousins being hardcore Star Trek geeks turned me off when I was younger; despite me always enjoying it at the same time.
So part of me is quite excited to see this. I think I'll check it out before it leaves theaters. I'll wait a bit so I can avoid the nerd rush (the type who don't wipe their own drool) and see it.

I wasn't a huge fan of the original series, though I have enjoyed all the movies (well, except for the first one). I also like all the "newer" series. I really liked this movie. I like how they worked it so that they can now make more films with this crew without messing up the continuity of the series and other movies.
And I don't think anyone is dumb if they didn't like it. I've got people on the IMDB boards insulting my intelligence because I liked Wolverine. I hate that.

I was never a big Star Trek fan, can't remember the old series and never bothered with the newer ones. I guess the one thing I dislike most about it is that every alien species is just a human with a funny forehead, face, or colors. That's just silly. But I do plan on seeing the new movie. From the trailers I think I might enjoy it.

Yeah, that's been a running joke among Trekkies (and even those involved in the production of the shows and films) for years about the noses and foreheads of species. But, the original series had an extremely low budget, and even later series didn't have really big budgets initially. They made do with what they had (and from time to time they did mix things up and did full-body make-up jobs to produce totally different aliens).
I also believe that at least one episode of DS9 (or was it TNG?) basically said that some of the major species featured in the shows (I believe it was humans, Cardassians, Klingons and maybe one or two others) were descended from a common ancestor species, hence the similarities.
I didn't watch it for the aliens though. I enjoyed the action and the characters. Most of all the characters. I can't get into any show or movie if I can't get into the characters.

Ok, I understand the low budget. And it's nice they at least tried to have an explanation with the common ancestor thing. I'll try watching the movie this weekend.

Even people who aren't fans of the series seem to like the movie. It's really mostly an action flick set out in space. Aliens are kept to a fair minimum (Vulcans and Romulans for the most part, and they're supposedly closely related to humans, if memory serves).

I went to see it today after a lot of humming and hawwing, since the trailer made it look shit, and I must say all my doubts were misplaced; I thought it was brilliant. I've never been a big fan of the original series (I prefer TNG) and i'm not exactly a huge Trekkie or anything, but I still really enjoyed it. The effects were great (of course) but it didn't rely too much on them; there were also good characters and a good story. Plus Simon Pegg's Scotish accent was much better than I expected. I hope they do a sequel.
