Okay, it´s true that I haven´t played the first DMC in YEARS and barely read through the player´s guide, but I never thought I´d suck this bad. I mean, I´m on the very first mission and I can´t even get past the first mini boss (guy with a scythe). I must be doing something very-very wrong, guy has a vicious attack where he rushes at Dante and almost always hits him. My first shock was realising I can´t block in this game, so I tried the next best thing, the roll to the side to evade his rush attack.... no joy. I keep getting mauled. Help!
I need strategies, I have never sucked this bad at a game!

I mean, I´m on the very first mission and I can´t even get past the first mini boss (guy with a scythe). THE FIRST LEVEL IS THE HARDEST IN THE WHOLE FUCKING GAME. I take it you're not playing the Special Edition/PAL version? Because the original edition's difficulty is waaaaaay harder. Easy can be named normal for all I care. The scary thing is, at the end of the first level is CERBERUS. And that's 5 TIMES AS HARD as the scythe guy. I'm not kidding, it took me 4 days alone to beat that motherfecker. So now that we now the game is freakishly unbalanced, let's see what we can do: Fighting Style: Trickster or whatever the one is called with the quick dash from the start, much more useful than any other in the beginning. Switch to swordmaster later when you're confident or gunmaster to link combos. Strategy: The scythe guy has that one screwy attack where he disappears for a sec or two and then magically swooshes at that very spot where it's the least convenient. Either wait for him to appear and time it (you can dash through him as well, he's kinda ghostly), or just spam the dash button. His eyes flash before he disappears and I think before he appears. Keep close to him, but constantly circle around him and use the hit-and-run tactic, 2-3 sword slices, dodge back, shoot a while, dodge forward, 2-3slices, dodge back, shoot, etc. Ignore any combos at all and rankings. Fuck that shit. As for Cerberus, well... You'll see what I mean. Godspeed. EDIT: Oh, and yeah, you can block with that last fighting style. But I personally never used it, never quite understood how to actually successfully block anything... Trickster is the way to go.

I personally think that Devil May Cry 3 itself is a wreck. Horrible fucking game, completely ruined the series for me. Cheap, unbalanced difficulty, lame ass overly "cool" and cocky portrayal of Dante...etc.
A game can be ball bustingly difficult and not be cheap, a great example is Demon's Souls.

Personally I think that the start of the game is hard only because you're pretty new to the whole thing in general, you're sloppy, make mistakes etc. and that is sort of a certain game over by itself ... just keep going at it and experiment with different ways of fighting or approaching enemies, stuff like that. I myself always went back to the first stage to fight the doggie for easy orb hunting once I got his strategy memorized

Ah, I love DMC 3, I only find it hard once I'm trying to beat it in Dante Must Die mode, now THAT is a beesh, three words: Enemies Devil Trigger.
I wouldn't drop the Royalguard style if you're not so confident with rolling, just look at Vergil, he blocks like crazy and creates tons of openings to slice and dice you, if you manage to master that, you'll hardly receive any hits, not to mention you can release the strength of the hits you block right back to the demons' faces (that even instakills almost any regular enemy on hard mode).
All in all, just stick with the style you feel more confortable with, and a golden rule: try each and every combo shown in the tutorial videos at the status screen, you'll get surprised of how easy the game gets once you master some of these, specially with the swordmaster style; once it is at level 3, weapons like the beowulf gauntlets will destroy anything on your way.
Oh, and as for a strategy on that reaper guy, it may sound kinda crazy, but DON'T EVADE, at least until you're so used to it that you do it without thinking, just calmly run away from the homing attack; if you start running to the side (never backwards) as soon (and I mean AS SOON) as the enemy dissapears and you hear the chime/ding sound that marks the beggining of the attack, I guarantee you that it won't even touch you. An even safer way is to jump in a certain exact moment so the damn Vanguard rushes at you in the air, by the time he starts charging you'll be safely back on the floor, that one is tricky as hell though, you can only tell when you have to jump after having killed tons of Vanguards.
