I just saw that on Kotaku! o-o I thought Homecoming was awesome. Only one I didn't HATE playing.. I could watch the others... but playing was like... ugh. horrible controls, story was too slow. Homecoming was swift but a good length. not too tedious and it had a good feel X-x I actually kind of liked the first game's clunky feel, I thought the level design was great. Silent Hill 2's combat did get boring but the exploration was still pretty good and it's still my favorite in the series. It took a while, but the more I played Silent Hill 3, the more I liked the gameplay, you just gotta challenge yourself. SH4: The Room is a bit of a chore for me to play, I kinda like the melee combat but overall...I don't know, it's hard for me to describe why I don't like SH4's gameplay as well. Origins had the WORST controls in the series for combat and exploration, but the level design was the best since the first two games. Haven't played Homecoming.

From his own mouth, indeed official. kotaku.com/5417355/report-silent-hills-akira-yamaoka-says-hes-left-konamio-o I thought Homecoming was awesome. Only one I didn't HATE playing.. I could watch the others... but playing was like... ugh. horrible controls, story was too slow. Homecoming was swift but a good length. not too tedious and it had a good feel X-x If you really hated all the other Silent Hill installments, why are you here? Well, he said he liked them, and liked to watch them be played. Just didn't like actually playing them. I dunno, they never really bothered me. I still consider SH2 one of my all time favorite games. But I won't lie, I was REALLY happy with the control overhaul Homecoming brought. What I didn't know was that he also composed the soundtrack to Contra:Shattered Soldier (Shin Contra). I FUCKING LOVED that soundtrack. I had no idea whatsoever he was involved with that until just tonight. Badass industrial-metal soundtrack, a perfect fit for the game.

Oh, I did enjoy playing Homecoming. Don't get me wrong, it isn't a BAD game. The gameplay was fine. But IMO the story was weak. It was actually the worst aspect of the game.
I mean... they kinda rehearsed SH2 and the plot twist wasn't exactly a surprise. Not new and not interesting. They just used cliches and blatanly copied previous games themes. That felt really lazy and a huge no no for me. And the torture scene felt kinda cheap. It felt like it was... gore for gore. I don't like that approach in movies, so I didn't like it here.
Because of these negative aspects, I got a bad feeling from that game. Like they were without new ideas for a Silent Hill game. And that surely spelt doom for me.
I wouldn't mind a fresh start btw. But I don't think Homecoming was that. They only really changed the control scheme a little. The story was a mix of previous SH games. Nothing changed much.
I don't know, the approach should change in some way, I think... In what way, I dunno. As long as it is disturbing and more psychological than gore-fest, I'm open to new ideas.
@vaco Deus: Is Shattered Memories OST really bad? I haven't heard it. From what you said I understand it is just more of the same, without anything really standing out. ? A pity...

blackswordsmanYeah, I'm afraid its true. Even Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's songs (Always On My Mind, When You're Gone, Acceptance, Hell Frozen Rain) are blah in comparison to past work. ------- Who should replace him? Its kinda like when Uematsu left the Final Fantasy series. I'd say a collaboration between Charlie Clouser (Nine Inch Nails / Saw) and Asche & Spencer (Stay) Clouser for the industrial noise and occasional melodic tunes and A&S for the surreal background music. Still, SH2-era Yamaoka cannot be beat

It is quite tragic that he's left. But to be realistic, we all knew it was going to happen eventually. Can't expect one person to do the same thing forever. It's been ten years.
Personally, I wish Team Silent stayed together for this long.
The series could use a fresh approach and sound. I don't believe it really needed it as Yamaoka's sounds 95% of the time were incredible. Some of the sounds sometimes just showed that he was getting lazy though. Time to move on.
Charlie Clouser could definitely do a great take on the sound. So could Trent Reznor (Quake OST).
There's a lot of people who could take the reigns, it's just most of them are pretty unlikely.

Never pictured him working with Grasshopper, but I love Grasshopper, so I'm ok with that. A Suda 51 game with Akira at the helm of it's soundtrack? Yes, please.
Thinking about it, a game like Killer7 would have been very fitting for one of his soundtracks.

I just saw this thread today (don't ask). This really sucks. Though I have to agree with what some others have said, the franchise in general doesn't seem to have much life left anymore anyway.

I really think the series could use a fresh beginning anyways. Too bad we never got the REAL next gen SH with Yamaoka scoring in it.
I really do think the series can go on. Climax has the right idea going (although I know some may disagree of course).

I agree, i think shattered memories shows potential, things that change in the game according to the player's input can bring new ideas to psychological horror. Now if they could just implement it in less obvious and predictable ways then they might have something. None of the just having monsters in the otherworld though, that will get old very quicky. The monsters were more scary when you didn't know where or when they would be comming to get you

I'm guessing we had a spammer, judging by all the topic reply notifications I got with no new replies to them.
