So, I was thinking, with all the varied talent that posts on this here site, that maybe sometime in the moderately vague future (5-10yrs?), that we could maybe try and orchestrate a fan film? What do you think? I graduate from film school in like 2 days, and I know there are a bunch of people here who could handle conceptual art, writing, as well as people savvy with 3D etc. I know tons of people (DP's, AD's, etc.) that would totally work free for me. There are probably some people who could handle such things as scheduling. Art direction and costumes (EileenGalvin + Hubby). I guess it comes down to $. I'll start saving now, and by now I mean whenever it becomes possible for me to save $. But this should happen. I mean why just sit back and wait for someone to possibly butcher SH when we could make something true to the series? Right?

As it turns out, I am kinda whup-ass when it comes to scheduling. Now films aren't my area of expertise but I can break it down into isolated areas which can be further resolved into man hours. This metric will not be entirely correct but it will scale realistically given accurate figures...
That having been said, risk assessment on films is always a wildcard. On indies, it goes up by at least an order of magnitude. And then we need to consider that the IP isn't necessarily up for grabs; Even big name studios have fought for decades over rights that eventually turned out to be worthless. You'd better believe that whoever owns the rights to Silent Hill would rather waste a million dollars in lawsuits than give you a fraction of that amount to make a brilliant film that they could entirely own, distribute, fuck up, whatever
But if you really wanna go for it, I will sign on

Awesome! Yea, I was thinking something along the lines of "The Hunt for Gollum", but SH. Just kind of slap it online when it is finished. I know some people did that when they made that Legend of Zelda fanfilm, and had to take it down. Hmm. I wonder what would happen. Even if we had to take it down, I'm sure it would have already spread like wildfire. and it's not like we'd be making any money off of it.
Yea, I'm thinking in the future when I am financially stable, whenever that might be, and might have extraneous funds to dump into a fan film. I wonder what they spent on hunt for gollum?...

With notice and the means to actually meet up for this sort of thing, I would be very willing to participate. Is this just an idle thought, or might you have some details to go along on just what the story would follow along?

Just an idle thought for now, but I definitely think it could be done with enough fans that wouldn't be afraid to commit some time and effort. Good actors would be key, as nothing stinks up a movie like bad acting.
Maybe sometime in the vague future, we could all agree on a story that wouldn't blow or be cliche, and I could try to work up an animatic, that way we could visualize it before hand to see if we would like it. Would be kinda cool. That way everyone, whether they could physically help or not, would get some input.
Location would be key, as we would need somewhere that looked like silent hill, or could with some vfx etc. And of course set design. However we will need to do it cheap. Which might mean securing dilapidated locations, which would be really hard.
Even if we just had one location like a dilapidated hospital or school, that would be cool. We could just aim for somewhere around the 10 minute mark. It could be played as if for the beginning of a bigger film.
Or we could always make a trailer. That would be fun. I'll think on this more.

I can't say I am that keen on working on an an fan film, if I was going to put time and effort into something I'd rather work on an orginal piece because as alx pointed out there might be copyrightment issues and it's just better pratice all around.
Of course Parody is always a good safety net as that is normally covered by the fair use right. But those things always more defendable if there is more than one source material.
even so I doubt I'd have any time to be involved much anyways outside pre-production. Might be up for an writing position depending on the length

As far as I know, it is all good if you want to do a fan film, but you would not be able to send it to film fests or make money off of it. I could be wrong though. I know Nintendo made those guys take down that fanmade Link video. Maybe they did that cause it kinda sucked though. I wonder if IGN or whoever does those fake video game trailers seeks permission first? I mean if you're not making money, I'm not sure what the problem would be... You guys wanna make a film with me called "Quiet Mound"? But seriously, I understand the desire to do something original. I just think it would be cool to do a take on it. Wouldn't have to be anything from the games necessarily. Oh! And I jotted down a mental note on the writing!

As far as I know, it is all good if you want to do a fan film, but you would not be able to send it to film fests or make money off of it. I could be wrong though. I know Nintendo made those guys take down that fanmade Link video. Maybe they did that cause it kinda sucked though. It depends on the license holder. For instance, CBS holds the rights to Star Trek. Their policy is that so long as no money is being made, fan films are okay. This has resulted in fan made series such as Star Trek: Phase II (which has seen involvement from a few Trek actors and writers) , Star Trek: Hidden Frontier, and Star Trek: Of Gods and Men (which was directed by veteran Trek actor Tim Russ). The general relationship between CBS and the Star Trek fans is pretty good, to the point that the Star Trek guys actually borrowed some props from the Phase II people when they were a little short on prep time. On the other hand, Fox will stomp pretty much anything fan made out of existence. Seems like a dick move on their part, but technically they're in the legal right. Then you get odd situations depending on local laws. Games Workshop was legally forced to veto a German fan-made Warhammer 40,000 movie called Damnatus which they'd previously okayed, because they discovered an aspect of German law gives creators certain non-transferable rights to what they've produced. In short, if GW had given Damnatus their blessing they would have actually lost some of the rights to 40K, and there is no way for the film makers to wave those rights. It sucks, but obviously GW can't allow that to happen, so they had to nix the film. Though they seem to have casually looked the other way now that its been 'leaked' to torrent sites.

I see. Well Damn, that does suck. Hmmm. Maybe silent hill inspired is the ticket. I mean you wouldn't have to call it a silent hill fan film. Everyone would probably ft it anyway. I suppose a lot of research would have to be done.

The key here is to know the law. For instance; without Konami's permission, we couldn't set the film in Silent Hill but South Ashfield and Toluca Lake are perfectly legal- as they are the names of actual towns. We could also have a town called Colina Reservada because Konami doesn't have the rights to that translation
The film and plot can resemble SH so long as it is legally distinct. Finally, if the film is not for profit then it is hard to be sued for a cash settlement- a cease and desist is much more likely

HAhahaha. I'm reasonably familiar with the cease and desist. I'm not sure if you guys ever saw the game "Bid for Power", but it was a Dragon Ball Z game that got made but couldn't be released due to conflict with funimation. I was selling a "acquired" copy on ebay, and got a cease and desist letter.
