It's a good thing I don't care about graphics much. I just got finished beating Chrono Cross for the ten billionth time on my widescreen and still loved it. Will have to play SH1 on it later. Different voice actors though... wtf... that's horrible. Their voices were iconic. If they're saving money the voices will probably be lousy too. WTF Konami? Go back to glory days once in awhile. People might actually like you guys again. God they're lazy asses. New content and unlocks with original cast. Is that so hard? God they piss me off. Holding on to my classics thank you. F*** you Konami. But see that's the thing. You're judging them before you even see/hear the final product. For all you know the new voice work might actually be BETTER than the original. The original voice work is what we're all used to, yes, but everyone here would have to admit that it was kind of hokey and at times downright stilted. Holding on to nostalgia is great, and I could be completely wrong about this, but hell, it could end up an entirely BETTER package than the original. If there's one thing I've realized about some of the folks on this board is that when it comes to Silent Hill, if it isn't almost exactly like the original games, it's not up to your standards. SH: Homecoming is a good example. By all means a pretty good survival horror game, one I actually enjoyed very much. But apparently too big of a departure from the series for some folks. My point being, Change CAN be a good thing, sometimes. Besides, the widescreen thing isn't about graphics, it's about aspect ratio. Seeing what should look like a normal man in James appear instead as a chubby midget doesn't sit well with me. The trade off being that you either deal with it or change the aspect ratio of your TV, effectively losing abut 20% of the picture. The high res graphics honestly don't mean that much to me, though I'll take them. But the wide screen 16:9 support means the world to me. As of currently I don't have an old SDTV to play my PS2 games on, so I'm stuck with the above options, and I don't care for it. Playing my Dreamcast poses the exact same problems, but unfortunately, people don't exactly consider making an HD port of Shenmue or Jet Set Radio a big priority... (Though I'd be overjoyed if those ever happened.)

I agree that change can be a good thing for the Silent Hill series, for new games. I was hoping that this would just be a port of the old games, just making the graphics better. What could go wrong with just making the graphics better? They're making them better. Not exactly subjectively better, just better. New voice actors, though? Hmm. Now you've just opened up a wormhole of ways to screw it up.
You're right, I haven't heard the new actors. They could be amazing, although it would still take a very long time to get used to them. People say the voice acting in 2 and 3 is bad. I understand why. I love their voice actors, though. I think they suit the games perfectly.
If they aren't doing the cut scene motion capture again (and I presume they aren't as this would require a lot of work), then the new voice actors are going to have to "act" their scenes by just copying the originals. The body movements are already in place, there's not much that the new actors can bring to the table except an imitation of what's already there. I wonder how good a performance you can get out of these actors when they're simply doing an imitation. As much as I love The Muppets, Kermit hasn't sounded the same since 1990.
I'd genuinely be in support of it a lot more if it were just a full on remake of the games, taking them in new directions like Shattered Memories.
But still, I live in hope that it will be good.

I understand your concern, but I don't understand your concern about the lack of mocap. MOST video game voice acting is done without the use of mocap, often the mocapping is done by other people anyway. Not nearly as big a deal to me. Especially since if the voice actor is good, they can read the script and be told how to present their performance and totally nail it. It's happened MANY times in video games.
A grand example of this would be Kevin Conroy doing Batman's voice in Arkham Asylum/City. He couldn't mocap Batman to save his life, but his performance as the caped crusader is flawless.

I think people are blowing this out of proportion. But it is Silent Hill, so that's normal.
I'm kind've apprehensive, but like Korn doing the theme for Downpour, I'm going to wait to hear it before I judge.
Though I already know it's gonna be really frickin weird for me. I've played SH2 and 3 at least a few times a year since it came out. Not hearing the familiar dialogue and voices, regardless of how good or bad the new one is going to be is going to feel uncomfortable for the first while.
It's like when they changed Tabris' voice in the english version of Evangelion for the rereleases. Couldn't deal with it, so I only watch it subtitled now hah.
Though it's not like the originals suddenly cease to exist. Though they don't transfer all that great exactly on newer TVs.
It would be nice if they included the original cut as a bonus feature or something, but that's obviously not happening.
I really look forward to this release either way. I'm also very interested in what they're doing with the new voiceovers. McGlynn is behind it and I trust her and her insanely gorgeous voice.
To assume this is really bad news already, before anything's been seen or heard is just typical Silent Hill community exaggeration.
I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't announce new voice overs, kept the old ones and just made it high def, people would be like WTF if you can update it to high def you should be able to update the voice overs and dialogue! Screw you Konami! Silent Hill is over!!!

I agree with the 'Lets not blow this out of proportion' notion. I get tired of fans that try to paint an production company as an witless greedy corperation just because they disagree with their plans.
For starters, Konami most likely doesn't truely want to hire new actors. Why would they? It would be too costly, time consuming and they know fans would prefer the orginal voices anyways. However certain circumstances concerning the actors have lead them to this awkward option. So lets stop acting like Konami is doing this just to spite us. Pushing away their customers would not benefit them and they know that.

Fair enough. I'm not really angry about any of this, just a bit skeptical. And with so many other awesome games coming out this Autumn, that tiny bit of skepticism is enough to push it down the list a bit (but it's still on the list, obviously).

owlwaxer: but if you DO get the HD collection, are you going to do a release of HD Noisy Hill? And will the original helium voice cast be involved?

My local Gamestop showed October as it's release date for a while, and then as of last week changed it to 12/01/2011, (This date is often a placeholder date, though not always.) I'll have to look at the calendar, because if this day doesn't fall on a Tuesday than it's most certainly a place holder date. As 90% of games officially release on a Tuesday. (Take it from someone who worked for Gamestop for over 5 years.)
EDIT: 12/01 is a Thursday which most likely means that that date is a placeholder. Meaning it may not even come out this year. Which would be good speculation that a new voice cast is indeed being recorded for the game.

Any word on the pricing? And is this PS3 only? Everywhere I've looked online, combined with everything I've read already points to yes, this being PS3 only. There was apparently a faked trailer that got a lot of people's hopes up because it featured a 360 logo at the end of it. But it was proven bogus, and nothing else was surfaced. However, I just read this too. Could be a timed exclusive, but it could also just be this fellow saying he's unsure, but the possibility isn't completely negative.

I can understand the new voice actors being better (the birthday caller has to be the same though), but the reeasons for doing it is what pisses me off. Unless they planned for better voice actors to begin with, it looks like they're just trying to save money which implies poor quality (cheap.) They very well may be better, but Konami will still bug me. [truth]Vincent quote pg. 42, line 30, Silent Hill - Echoes of the Past[/truth] Honestly though... Konami know their just being dicks. It's disgusting that they'd cheat Guy out of his money like that and illegally to add the cherry on top. That violates some serious rights. He deserves to get paid. If anything though, I want a 360 port with more bonus features -like playing as Alessa for example. Psychedlic Heather beams that glow with different colors. The Pyramid Head spear AND the Great Knife... stuff.... Graphical update and voiceovers are nice, but more bonus features necessary to justify spending money. When I said graphics, I meant it because when my tv can't get HD graphical quality, it keeps it small with a large black frame to fill in the empty space. Now that you mention the stretch though, I remember my grandparent's tv does that. I just forgot some tv's do that.

Whelp, here we go guys. The new voice acting. I'm going to give it a try but... my initial reaction is, this is fucking bullshit! I cringed immediately. I am a pretty open person but this seems very disappointing and borderline insane to think this is good.
I hope after a few playthroughs I will be able to enjoy it more and get used to it but I don't know...
This was one of the most unnecessary things the franchise has ever done.

Yeah, relying on Kotaku is rather silly ... >_>
With Downpour around the corner though it's a speculation I am willing to believe could be true
