I don't belive I will ever play this, since I can't afford to buy it. But about the voice acting... On that clip, the voices are solid. Yes, they're not the same. But they're up to today's standards.
The old voices will always be the voices for me. It's the game I've played and grew to love. But they're definitely cheesy, though that's also part of its charm and personality.
But the fans reactions are actually disgusting me. That's no small feat. Those examples weren't horrible or worse than the originals by any stretch of the imagination
"Ugh, why redo the voice acting? Maria sounds like a hooka you pick up under a dark overpass, then find out is a dude, and Eddie...WTF? PUHlease let the original voices be an option, because this is a hot mess. It's not nostalgia goggles, it's real talk."
"You turned all the realistic, believable voice acting into over-acted, anime voice acting..."
What? Those are borderline insane. It's VERY strong nostalgia and stubborness. And there are many more where they come from. It's very weird.

I can't say I like Eddie's and Maria's voices. They both sound way too relaxed, Eddie in particular sounds like he is high on something
James voice was fine in my opinon, not that different from the original,

I think Maria is alright. I don't know though, I would need the whole performance. I agree I don't particularly like Eddie's voice, but it might be due to the fact that I'm so used to his original almost over-the-top, pretty crazy voice.
I agree with that, James is actually alright.
I just can't agree with "these are horrible", "the original voice acting was miles better, realistic and believable" and "this is over-acted anime shit". If our opinions are any indication, they're actually more subdued. Which might be better for some characters, bad for others.
Of course, the original game is so iconic that these voices wouldn't ever be the same for any of us. Which is why I think it's a shame the whole problem with the voice actors. But at least new players will be just fine.
And we do have our original HD PC versions. ;D

I didn't like Eddie's voice, but that's mostly because if it ISN'T Liam O'Brien, it surely sounds like him, and I fucking loathe his voice acting, which sucks hard because he's in EVERYTHING. This could be entirely possible because he did some additional voices in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. And it's often easy to pick him out, because every single character he's ever played sounds EXACTLY the fucking same.
Then again I also always hated Eddie's original voice too, so really this isn't even a big deal.
Aside from that gripe I don't mind the other voices at all. And even in Eddie's case, that's personal bias. Maria sounded BETTER than before in my opinion, much more realistic and fitting to the character. James sounded damn near the same...so yeah.
Nothing to boycott over or even really shy sway from. This is all working just fine. Higher res textures and true widescreen support easily make me want to own this. And I WILL, already have it preordered.

Eddie sounds like a dude-bro and Maria sounds too breathy
It's hard to explain. Off the cuff reaction: no, sir, I do not like

They sound great to me. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is in charge and I have a ton of confidence in her.
James sounds good, Eddie is finally creepy (god, I hated his old voice). Mary Elizabeth McGlynn as Maria is enough to make this a day one purchase for me.
Mary seems slightly off, but that's probably because I've seen that particular sequence so many times that the new voice just seems unusual.
In all cases, the actual acting for the voices is much better then the originals.

Wow, I'm glad you guys are having a positive reaction. So far everywhere else it's been relatively 90% negative.
I'm not gonna be boycotting it. I'm hoping it will grow on me. But to me, right now it's just feeling terrible.
It could be like a song I initially despise but then after a few listens I fall in love with it. It's hard to not put faith in McGlynn.
When I buy the collection I'm going to completely shut out any previous experience I've had with the game and go in with a fresh start. If I love it, I love it, if I hate it so much, I always have the originals.
But I still stand by my original post bleh
Heather, Claudia, Douglas and Vincent are gonna be interesting.

Wow, I'm glad you guys are having a positive reaction. So far everywhere else it's been relatively 90% negative. Of course most of them are negative, I'd say most fans had already decided the voices were going to be crap before they even heard them, based on misplaced negative emotions caused by the fact that their precious Silent hill series has been changed, and change is bad! When someone sets up this 'crap filter' in their heads, anything short of absolute perfection will seem like an abomination.

I try hard not to do that, even to series I truly love, like Silent Hill. And it works for me.

The voices are fine. There's nothing wrong with them.
Which is kind of the point.
James already has hints of "brooding protagonist nr. 45" and I'm scared to see what they do to Angela or Laura, let alone Heather and Vincent, based on what they did to Eddie. McGlynn sounds good as Mary/Maria though.
I still think it's completely unneccessary, and that SH4 missing from the collection is a load of bollocks. There's going to be a new set of fans now that will have this dub as their first and only more fan bickering can come out of it. Not nice at all.

Mary seems slightly off, but that's probably because I've seen that particular sequence so many times that the new voice just seems unusual.. I'm hoping that's my problem with these scenes. It's all dialogue from that trailer/montage from the start of the game. Line's i've heard so many times from playing the game and leaving it on the start menu to hear so many times that i'm just not excepting the change. It all feels like a badly dubbed anime/film to me. Its not badly dubbed because the lip sync doesn't match (didn't notice it not), but because the voice isn't what i'm expecting or use to. That said, Maria's lines don't sit well with me. I still kinda get chills from the original delivery. The new stuff does nothing for me. Playing through the game might change that.

I am a pretty open person but this seems very disappointing and borderline insane to think this is good. Honestly, it was borderline insane to think Silent Hill 2's original voice acting was good.

To claim silent hill 2's acting was anywhere decent in the first place isn't just borderline, but right dab in the middle of the funny farm with Dahlia Gillespie as a cellmate.
I mean just listen to the first 40 seconds of this clip and then try to say that the game had decent acting
I'll happly take anime acting over.......whatever you call that

It's not that the original was good, its what we were used to.
After dozens of playthroughs, and years of fond memories changing the voices seems unneeded.
The original VO for the first RE were atrocious but I still wouldn't change them

I think I've just encountered too many hardcore fans defending something I detest and felt disturbed when I saw simular fan characterstics that I once had. At times I feel like I can't criticize the poor acting in something like Twilight when it's sometimes better than the acting of the early Silent hills, that would make me a hyprocrite.
and mabye it's the recent silent hills having and effect on me, but Silent hill is slowly becoming an guilty pleasure, I find it hard to ignore the flaws and at times I feel I need to justify liking it. If the quality of the old games could be improved somehow then mabye it would make it easier for me to do that.
