Just because I'm used to something doesn't mean I wouldn't change it, if it's bad. Hell I'm used to never having enough money to pay my bills, but I'll jump on any chance I can to change that.
The original acting in SH2 in particular was pretty terrible, and not even in the way Re1s was so terrible it was just campy. It was just bad. That's why when this whole little argument started I was fine with the idea of new voice acting. Maria's new voice is WAY better than the old one in my opinion, and even if you call it bad voice acting, it's still honestly a great deal better than the original.
The new Maria voice sounds much less prissy and more sultry, much like she should.

Personally I loved the voice acting in the second game. I thought the levels of emotion in it were spot on. Maybe not as strong as, say, Silent Hill 3 or Homecoming, but still pretty solid. I can honestly say that upon hearing the new cast my ears wept.
Eddie's actor doesn't even sound like he's trying!
And as much as I like McGlynn's talent, she isn't a good choice for Maria or Mary. Her voice is too deep. More suited to an independent action girl, not a kind and gentle dying wife or a clingy stripper.
Here, compare for yourselves. I still say the original is better:

Here, compare for yourselves. I still say the original is better: The remake is better by far. I hope they do even half as good a job with SH3. The voice acting there was largely cringe worthy.

I'm the only person in the world who still has dial up so I went to another site while that loaded. The best part about that video was using weird sounds from the first game at the end, totally cool. Anyway, that wasn't so bad that I felt those reactions in the video warranted. A lot of the voices seem deeper, less Japanese style. I don't think this is all that bad, but it feels more normal. While Silent Hill is supposed to be weird, it seems like they're trying to make it more like other games and movies with the voice acting. Maria's new voice seems pretty good though, fits her personality, makes me think of Black Cat in the Spider-Man 2 game. James' deep voice is a bit odd, but he is a killer, it'll just be easier to not like him now. Eddie sounds more evil, I might feel less sad about killing him now. Overall, I feel like these voices are quality but I'll feel less emotion while playing the game.

I gave it a bit and retried the video. I can appreciate Maria for sure. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get used to James.
Honestly, if I played the remakes a few times, I don't think I'd mind them.
However, Eddie is awkward and Mary, I don't know yet.
I still stand by my original post for the most part.
It's not JUST the fact that I've been used to the same lines over the last ten years. I was pretty damn aware that my initial reaction might be apprehension because of that. I was one of the people telling people to chill out and wait til they hear it.
But no matter how objective I look and listen, it feels mostly off and awkward. It's just shit to me right now~
I'd much rather love the hell out of this than want to stab it with fire.

I'm not going to buy the remastered games anyway, so it really doesn't matter, but I still dislike the new cast. As Tabris said, listening to it again makes me somewhat appreciate both James, Maria and maybe even Mary. Maybe. But Eddie is just bad. He doesn't even sound mentally deranged. He just sounds bored.
And I've heard others, including eggnog, comment that by deepening James' voice he sounds far less sympathetic. Isn't the whole point of the game to coax the viewer into liking James only for his revelation to completely destroy any pre-determined opinions of him? If the player doesn't feel sorry for him, wouldn't that make the ending twist a little anti-climatic?

Even if that was the point, I never really did like James. In fact honestly, the only leading character in any SH game I truly liked was Heather. Harry wasn't bad, because I could completely understand his actions, he just didn't have a lot of personality to like or dislike one way or another. I suppose that was fleshed out a bit better in Shattered Memories, and I liked him well enough there, but again still not a LOT there.
James though, never had a reason to like him, though that's not to say I didn't feel some attachment to him, even after the big plot revelation. Still not only was his previous voice acting horrendously bad at times, but it'd also sometimes come off as annoyingly whiny. Hopefully this new one doesn't, this clip doesn't, but it's only a clip.

But Eddie is just bad. He doesn't even sound mentally deranged. He just sounds bored. I don't agree with that assessment. I once did janitor work as a summer job at a psychiatric hospital. One day they were doing a transfer on one of the more severe patients, and forgot to tell me to stay out of a particular hall until they were done. So I'm gathering some trash when a guard realizes I'm there and shoos me away. However, in the time it took me get out of the way I saw the patient and he saw me. He was restrained, but his mouth was free. He spoke to me for just a moment and sounded a lot like the new Eddie, which is why I think the new voice is creepy.

While Eddie is supposed to be creepy in that specific scene, the actor has to be able to do more than creepy because lets remember that Eddie isn't just a pyscopath, but a pretty pathetic one. He's not a cold calculating killer, he's just a overweight slob who can't take criticism and who got himself killed the moment he started firing at someone who could fight back.
In my opinon Eddie's orginal voice acting was one of the more decent performances among the mostly bad ones. He was supposed to sound pathetic.

it's not as bad as I thought it would be either way won't be dismissing them. Dunno how much more awesome the game itself will be though looks wise

Troy Baker (the new James) has a little interview where he discusses Silent Hill HD a bit more: thegamingliberty.com/?p=39804"Specifically to Guy Cihi, you know, outside of Silent Hill 2, I honestly don’t know of anything else he’s done. I’m sure that if Silent Hill was my big game and I did it ten years ago and I saw how successful it was, I would want more money too. Actually, I don’t know if I would be that way because id just be happy that I was a part of a successful franchise. The thing that I have learned, especially with the Japanese companies, is that you never ever speak out. You never bash your employers. You never bash the people who gave you a huge leg up no matter what they’ve done or what you feel that they’ve done. But the fact that he’s talking about residuals being in videogames shows you just how out of the loop he is because residuals don’t happen. They don’t exist. Don’t think for a second that I don’t wish that I had a fraction of a penny for every unit sold of Call of Duty: Black Ops or Modern Warfare 2 or Modern Warfare 3 that we’re finishing up right now. I would love to see that. But that’s not how the system works right now. So it’s not that Konami wasn’t willing to pay them, he (Guy) wanted residuals, he wanted non-existent money that he felt that he was owed. So Konami has no fault in this whatsoever. And they wanted to use him again. Guy was the one who was outspoken about it and said that unless this happens he wouldn’t do it, so he forced Konami’s hands. So if anybody wants to blame anybody for why they chose new voices, they can go back to the original James and he’s the one to blame." Something to think about.

Nice to know they've got a real actor to do James' voice this time, I don't just mean that refering to the fact I think James' orginal voice acting was crap. I really mean Guy chi isn't a real actor, never was. He is actaully a CEO of an company that lives in Japan and only went to the Silent hill 2 auditions to take his daughter there to audition for the role of Laura and just got involved.
It gives me confidence that they are hiring a guy who has more experiance in acting than the orginal. Shows that they arn't taking this recasting thing lightly

Guy Cihi responded on Facebook about all this: More on this at alchemillahospital.net/guy-cihi-talks-about-sh-re-casting/As for the HD collection, I won't be buying it because I don't have anything capable of displaying HD and I already have several copies of these games. [shrugs] I just don't see the point, really, anyway.

The more I read about this the more Guy comes off as an arsehole. It's so confusing. I have no idea who I really believe or where my faith lies. In fact, I have no concept of residuals. I haven't a clue what they are, or how they work.
